Tourism is one of the cleanest industries that can be found. When a tourism market is created or expanded in a region, it can offer seasonal employment, income opportunities and much more. It is a way to increase the tax base for a community without requiring heavy infrastructure increases or other investments. Most all the investments are done completely by individuals (or are already in existence).

Many communities have come up with an event or attractions that would put them on the tourism map. Mt. Rushmore is probable the greatest example of someone creating a site to create a tourism industry in the area. It worked!

Other communities are learning how to follow the example. Many create festivals or fairs that can be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. Some take advantage of natural resources (like a neighboring national park). Most all communities are discovering that tourism is a great source of increased revenues for their region.

Leisure Services is the perfect career for people interested in tourism. It is a growing field that includes everything from the local pool to mega-resorts. Ten years ago, it was hard to find a college that offered the courses needed to get a LS degree. Today the tourism industry is flourishing and the need for qualified employees is making the LS degree more accessible.

Leisure Services is the study of the recreational and tourism industry. It includes field specialties specific for different ages, needs, or even industry markets. It is the perfect career opportunity for individuals who are extroverted, enjoy outdoors activities, or are naturally inclined to entertain those around them.

As tourism continues to grow and expand, so will the opportunities that are offered in the industry. You can look for new communities to create their tourism niche and new fields and careers that will be created to run those tourist attractions.
