Overview
Alitalia has been offering both passenger travel and freight transportation since 1947 and is the airline of choice for many Italian travelers who want to explore Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Alitalia serves 34 airports and has been a member of the SkyTeam alliance since 2001. Over 24.5 million passengers flew with Alitalia in 2007 alone, and the company continues to increase its operating fleet year after year.

Check in

Passengers traveling from North America are encouraged to check in at least two hours before departure to pass security checks. Passengers traveling from an Italian airport should check in at least 60 minutes for intercontinental flights, and 30 minutes for domestic flights.

Baggage

Carry on
Alitalia passengers may carry one bag plus one personal item as carryon luggage. The bag may not exceed dimensions of 21 x 14 x 10 inches, and cannot weigh more than 10 lbs.

Checked
Flights to the United States, Canada and Mexico allow for two bags with a maximum weight of 70 lbs each and linear dimensions no larger than 158 cm. Domestic flights and international economy flight baggage restrictions are limited to one bag with a maximum weight of 44 lbs.

Additional bags
Excess baggage charges will be imposed for items that are larger than 42 x 70 x 40 cm, and heavier than 32 kgs. Packages larger than 32 kgs may be sent as cargo; contact the reservations department to determine if your baggage may incur excess baggage charges.

Passenger change details

Name changes are not permitted on Alitalia reservations; route changes and other modifications can be made directly by contacting the reservations department.

Child fares

Children between the ages of 2 and 11 years of age may be eligible for a discount of 15 percent on standard adult fares, but this varies by destination and season. Children under two years of age who can comfortably sit on an adult's lap may fly for 10 percent of the standard fare rate; children under the age of five are not allowed to travel without an accompanying adult.

Senior discounts are available on select flights; contact the reservations department for details on your specific itinerary.

Pets

Pets are only allowed on transatlantic flights and are treated as checked baggage; they must be transported in an approved kennel or carrying case. Contact the reservations department to confirm if your pet is eligible.

Carrying Musical Instruments

Musical instruments that are not longer than 40 inches may be transported as checked baggage; larger instruments may be carried on board if the passenger has purchased an extra seat. Other items may be transported as cargo.

In-flight service

Movies and music programs are readily available on Economy class and Business class flights. Passengers can also enjoy reading materials such as Ulisse magazine, and the GriffAir catalog. Meals, snacks and beverages are available on select flights.

Alitalia offers meal service for international flights of 3 hours or more, and may also serve snacks and beverages throughout the flight. Passengers with dietary restrictions can contact the airline at least 24 hours in advance to reserve a special meal.

Passengers can enjoy the monthly publication Ulisse, Alitalia's in-flight magazine on every flight. The bilingual magazine covers the latest topics in fashion, lifestyle, dining trends and travel.
