Check in
Domsetic travelers with baggage should check in at least 90 minutes prior to departure; those without baggage may check in 60 minutes prior to departure. Check in times vary significantly depending on destination, and international travelers may need to check in up to 3 hours prior to departure to ensure efficient check-in and to get through security.

Carry on
One bag is allowed as carryon luggage with a maximum weight of 40 lbs and no larger than 45 inches.
Checked
For flights within the United States, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Canada: two bags permitted with a maximum weight of 50 lbs. each. The bags may not exceed 62 linear inches.
For flights to and from Brazil: two bags are permitted, with a maximum weight of 70 lbs. each.
For international destinations: two bags are permitted with a maximum weight of 50 lbs. each.
Customers who purchased domestic economy class tickets May 12, 2008, through June 14, 2008, may check one bag for free and check a second bag for $25 each way. Customers who purchase domestic economy class tickets on or after June 15, 2008, will be charged $15 each way for the first checked bag and $25 each way for the second checked bag.
Additional bags
Checked baggage weighing over 50 lbs/23 kgs but not more than 70 lbs/32 kgs will be charged at the rate of $50 per piece.
Checked baggage weighing over 70lbs/32 kgs but not more than 100 lbs/45 kgs will be charged at the rate of $100 per piece.
Baggage weighing more than 100 lbs/45 kgs will not be accepted as checked baggage.
Checked baggage which is larger than 62 in/157 cm will be charged at the rate of $150 per piece.
Baggage measuring more than 115 in/292 cm will not be accepted as checked baggage.
Passenger change details
Passengers may make changes to their reservation online by registering their ticket information and obtaining a username and password. The website allows passengers to cancel or modify reservations, and also select or change seats. Passengers may also contact the reservations department to make changes directly.
Child fares
Children under two years of age who can comfortably sit on an accompanying adult's lap may fly for free on American Airlines. Children older than two years must travel in their own seat and pay the standard fare price.
Senior fares
Senior fares and discounts are available on select tickets and itineraries throughout the year for adults who are 65 years of age or older. Discounts and special offers can be viewed online on the airline's website or by contacting the reservations department.
Pets
Pets may be taken on board as carryon luggage or checked baggage depending on the type of pet and size of the pet carrier. Checked or carry-on pets are allowed on domestic flights in the 48 contiguous states in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Alaska and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Passengers are encouraged to contact reservations about pet restrictions at the time of booking, and to arrive at the airport at least 4 hours prior to departure for the check-in process.
Carrying Musical Instruments
Musical instruments are considered to be carry on or checked luggage, and may incur extra fees if they do not meet the weight and dimension requirements. Passengers may choose to purchase a separate seat to carry oversized musical instruments, but some oversized instruments are not accepted in the coach cabin. Contact the reservations department to confirm eligibility of your musical instrument.
In-flight service
American Airlines serves complimentary meals for domestic flights as well as beverages, snacks and special meals for those with dietary restrictions. Inflight Wi-Fi is available on select transcontinental flights as of August 2008, and in flight entertainment options include personal entertainment media players with touch screen displays for Premium Class travelers. In flight movies and music are also available for international flights.

AAdvantage is the frequent flier program available for American Airlines travelers.
