Overview

Bmi is the second largest airline at London Heathrow and was first formed as 'Air Schools Limited' in 1938. It has since been known as Derby Airways, British Midland Airways Ltd, British Midland , bmi British Midland and now just 'bmi.' Bmi operates over 1,700 flights per wekk over a network of 36 airports in the UK, Europe, India, Saudi Arabia and transatlantic to the USA and Caribbean.

Bmi flies to hundreds of destinations around the world including Belgium, France, India, South Africa, Holland, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland and Syria. The majority of flights fly out of London Heathrow airport.

Check in

All desks open at least 2 hours prior to departure. Passengers may check in at the desk up to 30 - 50 minutes before departure on flights to Europe (depending on destination) and self check-in is available at most airports. Long haul flights to certain destinations may allow passengers to check-in the night before travel; contact the reservations department to determine if your particular itinerary is eligible for early check in.

Passengers may also check in online from 24 hours up to 30 minutes before the scheduled departure by using their booking reference number and last name on the 'Check-in' feature of the bmi home page.

Baggage

Baggage requirements may vary by flight and departing airport, but the following requirements are the standard

Carry on

The maximum size of carry on baggage is 55 cm x 40 cm x 23 cm including wheels, handles and side pockets. Business class flyers may take up to 2 pieces of carry on baggage plus one personal item on both transatlantic and international flights; premium economy travelers may take up to 2 pieces of carry on plus one personal item on transatlantic flights; economy travelers may take 1 piece of carry on no larger than plus one personal item on both transatlantic and international flights.

Checked

Business travelers are allowed unlimited pieces of baggage weighing no more than 30 kg on international flights, and 2 pieces up to 64 kg (maximum weight of 32 kg per piece) on transatlantic flights. Economy flexible, economy and economy saver flyers may also take unlimited pieces on international flights with a maximum total weight of 20kg, and up to 2 pieces up to 46 kg (max weight 23 kg per piece) on transatlantic flights.

Additional bags

All passengers traveling to and from the UK are not allowed to carry bags that weigh more than 70 lbs. If the carry on luggage does not fit in the overhead compartments, the passenger must check in the bag to transport it in the baggage hold. Excess baggage charges are as follows:

Bmi operated UK Domestic, Europe, Moscow, Africa and Asia: 7 pounds/10.50 euro per kg outbound, and 7 pounds/10.50 eurosper kg inbound.

Bmi operated Saudi Arabia: Dammam: 21.60 pounds/32.42 euros per kg; Jeddah: 19.80 pounds/29.75 euros per kg; Riyadh: 21.60 pounds/32.42 euros per kg

Bmi operated USA, Caribbean: Chicago: 70 pounds/105 euros per piece; Caribbean and Las Vegas: 90 pounds/135 euros per piece

All excess baggage charges are approximate and may change depending on the individual route.

Passenger change details

Passengers can make date and time changes by accessing their ticket information online or calling the reservations center. Cancellations will incur a $50 administrative fee, and date and flight time changes will incur a $60 charge per person.

Child fares

Children up to 2 years of age are charged at 10% of the adult fare and must sit on an accompanying adult's lap. Children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult 16 years or older, and will be charged the following fares (ages 2-11):

UK Domestic and Western Europe: full adult fare except fully flexible CBMI fare where they are charged 67% of the adult fare

Moscow: 75% of adult fare

Eastern Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia: 75% of adult fare, 67% discount between Tehran and UK
USA, Caribbean and Saudi Arabia: 75% of adult fare depending on the route

Pets

Bmi can carry assistance dogs free of charge, and allows passengers to carry a dog, cat or ferret on a UK Domestic flight when flying form the UK on an International Service. However, passengers flying on an Economy Saver or sale fare on shorthaul routes may need to purchase an Economy fare or higher . Pets must be carried in an IATA approved pet carrier and may be carried as accompanied baggage within or outbound from the UK.

Carrying Musical Instruments

Musical instruments are treated as standard baggage and may be checked in to be carried in the hold. However, passengers may purchase an extra seat for large or fragile items, if they have been approved by the airline.

Select economy flights offer complimentary breakfast, snacks and bar service. All flights offer a complimentary newspaper and some beverages. Long-haul flights and international flights offer in-flight entertainment, complimentary meal service and reading materials for all passengers.
