Overview

Germanwings offers affordable, budget-friendly flights to Germany from several destinations in the UK. The airline was founded in October 2002 and is headquartered in Cologne. It served approximately 8 million passengers in 2007, and promises superior customer service even at a low cost.

Check in

Passengers may check in using the web check-in service on the airline’s website if they meet certain requirements, or visit the check in desk at the airport. Passengers are encouraged to check in at least 90 minutes before departure, and airport check in desks close 30 minutes before departure. Web check-in can be completed no later than 24 hours before departure and no earlier than 3 hours before departure.

Baggage

Carry on
Passengers may bring one piece of hand luggage that weighs less than 8 kg and is smaller than 55 x 40 x 20 cm in size. Each passenger may also carry a jacket, umbrella, laptop or duty-free items in the cabin at no extra cost.

Checked
Checked luggage registered online or via the call centre is €5 per piece. Passengers cannot check in more than a total of 23 kg (20 kg after March 28, 2009) of luggage without paying extra charges. Only one item of checked luggage is allowed on each flight, and cannot weigh more than 44 lbs.

Additional bags
Additional bags are charged a fee of €7 per kg, and cannot weigh more than 110 lbs.

Passenger change details

Passengers may change their flight details up to 48 hours before departure for a fee of €25 plus any price differences associated with the ticket change. Name changes are possible on Germanwings flights by calling the call centre up to 2 hours before departure and paying the €35 name change fee. Rebooking a flight is also permitted up to 2 hours before departure for a fee of €26. A cancellation fee of €25 is charged for FlexPlus customers per booking.

Child fares

A service fee for children under 2 each way is €15 for all European flights and €17.85 for flights within Germany. Unaccompanied minors are charged a €30 for flights within Germany only.

Pets

Any pets (except guide dogs) are not permitted on flights to the UK or Ireland, but Germanwings can transport pets in a box or bag that weigh no more than 8 kg within Germany. A fee of €25 is charged for approved pets.

Carrying Musical Instruments

Passengers may take musical instruments on their flight as carry-on items, but will need to pay a fee for oversized items.

In-flight service

Germanwings offers snacks and beverages for purchase on each flight; this selection includes coffee, tea, cappuccino, and lunch packs called ‘Happy Snacks’ comprised of a sandwich, soft drink or beer, and chocolate bar. The airline also serves soft drinks and breakfast packs.
