Overview

As the largest airline operator in Asia and the national carrier for Japan, Japan Airlines (JAL) offers both economy and first class fares to hundreds of destinations around the globe. The airline has become famous for its deluxe services and amenities on each of its flights, and offers its own JAL Mileage Bank frequent flyer program.

Check in

Passengers may check in at the airport desk or a self check-in kiosk at the airport. A web check-in option is also available for both domestic and international passengers where they may select or change seats online.

Baggage

Carry on
Each passenger may bring one carry-on handbag and one personal item on each flight. The carry-on bag cannot be larger than 22 x 16x 10 inches or weigh more than 22 lbs.

Checked
First Class, Executive Class and Economy Class passengers are permitted to take 2 pieces of baggage at no charge to and from the USA, Canada , Mexico and Brazil. These bags must be no larger than 62 linear inches and cannot weigh more than 70 lbs. Free baggage allowance requirements vary for all flights to and from other places other than the USA, Canada, Mexico and Brazil.

Additional bags
Excess baggage charges are calculated by taking the normal economy class fare between boarding points and multiplying it by 1.5% of the excess baggage weight (kg). The standard rate in excess of the free baggage allowance is calculated in yen.

Passenger change details

Passengers are permitted to make some changes online, or by calling the reservations department. Fees and charges vary by destination and the time of the change.

Child fares

Children between the ages of 2 and 11 may pay 75 percent of the adult fare; children up to 2 years of age may pay an infant fare.

None.

Pets

Service animals are permitted in the cabin when accompanied by their owner. Pets that meet certain requirements are permitted on board in a pet carrier or container and will be stowed in the cargo hold on most flights.

Carrying Musical Instruments

Musical instruments that exceed 120cm (47 in.) or total linear dimensions exceeding 203cm (80 in.). and items that weigh more than 32kg (70 lbs.) may be charged an excess baggage fee depending on destination.

In-flight service

JAL provides several in-flight services depending on the duration and class of flight. The MAGIC entertainment system offers audio and video on demand, in-flight movies, virtual shopping catalogs and games. Meals, snacks and beverages are also available.

Full-course meals are available on First Class routes and these may include offerings such as sushi, grilled fish, Japanese noodles and Italian dishes. Economy class travelers may enjoy dinner service on select flights, along with refreshments and beverages. JAL offers many western food choices and special in-flight meals for those with dietary restrictions. JAL also serves children’s meals, vegan meals, and raw food vegetarian meals on select routes.

All passengers can enjoy a copy of the in-flight magazine Skyward when flying JAL.
