Overview
Northwest Airlines was launched in 1926 as a mail courier service between Minneapolis/St. Paul and Chicago. The airline began offering passenger service in 1927, and has since grown to offer both domestic and international flights. Northwest Airlines is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Delta Airlines.

Check in
Passengers may check in online using the check-in tool on nwa.com or check in at self-service kiosks or ticket counters at the airport. Self-service kiosks can be used to check-in at least 30 minutes before departure for US destinations and 60 minutes before international flights. Passengers are encouraged to check in at least 45-60 minutes before departure depending on their destination.
Baggage
Carry on
Passengers may bring one piece of baggage aboard the aircraft and one personal item. Carryon baggage cannot be larger than 45 linear inches.
Checked
Northwest will accept baggage up to a maximum of 50 pounds (23 kg) and a total linear dimension of 62 inches (158 cm) per piece. For domestic and trans-Atlantic travel, the maximum weight accepted for any piece of checked baggage, including special baggage items, is 70 pounds. For trans-Pacific travel, the maximum weight accepted for any piece of checked baggage is 100 pounds. A fee of $15 is charged for the first bag and $25 for the second bag for most types of travelers on domestic flights; WorldPerks Elite, SkyMiles Medallion and SkyTeam Elite Members can takeup to two bags at no charge. Additional bags
Additional charges apply for baggage weighing more than 50 pounds (23 kg) or with a total linear dimension of more than 62 inches (158 cm) per piece.
Passenger change details
Passengers may make some changes to flights online or by calling the reservations department. All changes are subject to varying fees and charges based on the time the change request is made and type of ticket purchased.
Child fares
Children's fares are available on select routes.
Senior fares
Seniors age 65 years or older may be eligible for discounts on select flights.
Pets
Advanced arrangements are required when traveling with pets, and the airline charges a one-way, per-airline fee of $80 for pets transported in a kennel or pet carrier in the passenger cabin. International travel requirements vary by country, and fees will also vary depending on the origin and final destination. Service animals may travel on all flights at no charge.
Carrying Musical Instruments
Musical instruments that meet general baggage requirements may be taken on board as carry on or checked baggage. Any oversized or overweight bags may be charged an excess fee of $80 or more depending on flight and destination. Passengers may choose to purchase an extra seat to transport large or fragile items.
In-flight service
Snacks and beverages are available on each flight and passengers can enjoy movies and entertainment on select flights. Meal service involves boxed lunch/dinner meals or breakfast packs for $10 each; these are available only on select flights to/from Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii and the Caribbean.

WorldPerks is the frequent flyer program available for Northwest travelers.
