Overview

United began as a part of a partnership between four U.S. mail carriers, and now serves nearly 119 destinations in 26 countries and two territories. United Airlines operates more than 3,000 flights each day and is a founding member of Star Alliance. The airline owns key global air rights in the Asia-Pacific region, Europe and Latin America, and is one of the largest international carriers in the United States.

Check in

Passengers may check in online using their Mileage Plus member login information or e-ticket number. For travel within the U.S., passengers are encouraged to arrive 60 minutes before the flight without checked bags and 90 minutes with checked bags. International travelers are encouraged to arrive at least 2 hours before the flight. A check-in kiosk is available at select airports.

Baggage

Carry on
One carry-on bag and one personal item is permitted on each flight. The carry-on bag cannot be larger than 45 inches in total linear length.

Checked
Two pieces of checked luggage are permitted on both domestic and international flights. Checked bag fees are $15 each way for the first bag and $25 each way for the second bag. A $2 fee may apply for checked bags via curbside check-in at some U.S. airports.

Additional bags - Excess baggage fees and charges apply for all passengers if they are:

Checking in more than two bags;
any of the bags weigh more than 50 lbs. (23 kg);
any of the bags exceed 62 linear inches (158 linear cm)*; and/or
any checked bags are considered special items.

Passenger change details

Passengers may make changes online or by calling the reservations number. A difference in fares will be charged to the credit card used during booking, and extra fees may apply depending on when the changes are made.

Child fares

One child under the age of 24 months may travel for free within the U.S., between the U.S. and Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands, and between the U.S. and Canada when accompanied by an adult; they must be able to sit comfortably in the adult's lap. Children under 24 months of age must pay the full fare for international travel.

Senior fares

Seniors who are enrolled in the Silver Wings Plus program may qualify for flight discounts; these vary depending on the route.

Pets

Pets may be accepted as carry on luggage or checked baggage depending on the type of animal and size of the kennel. Passengers must contact the reservations desk to receive approval when traveling with pets, and fees range between $175 - $250 each way depending on the size of the kennel and whether the pet is being transported as carry-on. Pet fees range between $250 - $500 each way for international travel.

Carrying Musical Instruments

Musical instruments that meet standard baggage requirements may be transported as carry-on or checked luggage. Passengers may purchase an extra seat for oversized or fragile items.

In-flight service

United Airline offers meals, entertainment, shopping via SkyMall, and high-tech services depending on the cabin class. Passengers may also pay a small fee to purchase more legroom near the front of Economy cabin flights (an extra 5 inches).

Passengers may purchase snack boxes and food items on flights longer than 2 hours of length I all classes. Some classes offer meal service which includes the United Snackbox, fresh sandwiches and salads, a la carte snacks and drinks. In-flight Magazine

Passengers can enjoy Hemispheres Magazine on board all flights when flying with United.
