More Holiday Gifts for Globetrotters

Submitted by LowFares on December 12, 2009 No Comment

Holiday-Gift-Citizen-Folding-BikeGift-giving season is here. Trying to find a desirable present for the globetrotter on your list can be difficult. Avid travelers already have all the basics: a full selection of luggage and all the technology and accessories to make an airplane flight more comfortable. Items that are new to the travel market are often overpriced.

But there are some unique, affordable holiday gifts that will make desirable gifts for the globetrotter on your list.

  1. Pre-paid smart phones. Smart phones are not cheap and their service plans can easily run over $100 per month. Prepaid cell phone companies usually have per month prices that are much cheaper than the big boys: around $50-$60 per month for all the talking and email checking that the busiest businesswomen could possibly need. Larger prepaid carriers like Boost, Virgin and MetroPCS have unlimited plans starting at $50 per month, while smaller carriers like Platinumtel offer cheap data rates and accompanying smart phones that are reasonably priced.
  2. The Tokyo Citizen Bike is the perfect vehicle for globetrotting cyclists who don’t want to bring their full-sized mountain bike to every destination. The Citizen has 16 inch wheels and weighs a mere 29 pounds, making it perfect for checking with your baggage. Best of all, the bike costs only $200.
  3. The Marmot PreCip Jacket is popular among adventure travelers who spend a lot of time outdoors. But it is also a good addition to any traveler’s suitcase. The waterproof shell and breathable, light-weight material make it easy to pack and carry.
  4. If all else fails, simply opt for a gift card from your globetrotter’s favorite airline. Most airlines offer them now, and they can be used for regular tickets or allow the user to afford an upgrade to business class.

More gift ideas are available on the New York Times Frugal Traveler blog.
