Hotel of the Week: The Broadmoor

There are very few resorts in The United States that truly offer a vacation experience that families have literally been enjoying for generations. Since it opened in June 1918, The Broadmoor has hosted U.S. Presidents, countless government officials and foreign dignitaries, and hundreds of celebrities and professional athletes, not to mention some of the most elite business leaders and prominent families from across America and around the world.
Located on 3,000 acres in Colorado Springs, Colorado, The Broadmoor is situated at the base of the Rocky Mountains and offers five-star, world-class accommodations that define luxury. The breathtaking setting and immaculate landscaping is complemented by top-notch service that guests receive from every employee on the premises.
The Broadmoor, however, is more than an attractive and comfortable place to stay. It’s a full-service resort that offers some of the best golf courses in the region, not to mention a full-service luxury day spa, tennis, swimming, 25 specialty boutiques and shops and 18 restaurants, cafes and lounges, all on the property.
If you’re flying in from out of state, The Broadmoor is located just minutes from the Colorado Springs Airport, which is serviced by nine major airlines. Non-stop flights are offered from a handful of major cities, including Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago, Denver and Minneapolis. Many more non-stop flights are offered to and from Denver International Airport, located about 90 minutes from the resort by car.

For almost 100 years, The Broadmoor has been known for its luxury accommodations, which today include 593 deluxe, spacious and nicely-equipped rooms, along with 107 suites. Just last year, in May 2009, the resort opened a new section which includes 44 stand-alone, multi-bedroom cottages that are ideal for families who want extra space and privacy. Regardless of the room type, each is wonderfully decorated and includes plenty of amenities designed for comfort.
While the nearby area offers a wide range of tourist attractions and activities, there’s really no reason to leave The Broadmoor’s property if you’re staying for a long weekend or even a full week. The assortment of available activities is diverse, and designed to cater to people of all ages, regardless of the season.
The resort’s 54 holes of Championship golf are certainly a major draw. The resort will host the 2011 U.S. Women’s Open in early July 2011. Additionally, the Broadmoor’s day spa, organized children’s activities, three swimming pools, six tennis courses, fully-equipped fitness center, movie theatre, and upscale shops provide for as much activity or relaxation opportunities as each individual guest desires. The resort’s property is also home to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, where you’ll find more than 700 animals, including an incredible giraffe exhibit that allows guests to feed and pet these magnificent creatures.
Whether you spend your days doing something active or pamper yourself at the spa, you can expect fine gourmet dining and cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner prepared by award-winning chefs at each of the resort’s restaurants.
Since 1961, the Penrose Room has been a flagship restaurant at the resort and a favorite fine-dining establishment among resort guests and Colorado Springs locals alike. It’s just one of several fine-dining restaurants on the property, all of which offer an extensive wine list and truly memorable cuisine. On Sundays, plan on enjoying a lavish buffet brunch featuring more than 70 entrée items and live piano music. It’s an experience you won’t want to miss during your stay.

Besides its sheer beauty, The Broadmoor offers a unique, domestic charm, the likes of which you won’t find at most other resorts. Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway for two, a family vacation, a business meeting, a honeymoon or destination wedding, The Broadmoor is equipped and has the experience and expertise to make your stay more than just memorable.
You’ll often find extended families vacationing together and celebrating holidays here year after year, as The Broadmoor is the type of place where the majority of guests are repeat visitors who continue to share this vacation destination with their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
One of the wonderful things about this resort is that while it certainly caters to adults, it also does a remarkable job making kids and teens feel welcome and constantly entertained – with special menus at the restaurants, unique activities on the property, and special amenities in the guestrooms. Plus, The Broadmoor is pet-friendly and caters to its canine guests with dog walking services, a room service menu featuring gourmet dog food and treats, plush dog beds, and plenty of open space for pets to run around.
While you might expect to pay top dollar to stay at The Broadmoor, the resort offers special promotions and discounts which make a stay here surprisingly affordable. Packages start as low as $85.00 per person, per night (based on double occupancy), between November 1, 2010 and February 28, 2011. During its peak seasons, however, plan on spending more than $250.00 per person, per night (based on double occupancy) for accommodations, and considerably more to stay within one of the cottages.
