Best Train Journeys

Submitted by zackbeseda on January 31, 2013 7 Comments

There’s nothing quite like a train trip.  Seeing the countryside from the comfort of a train carriage can be one of the most relaxing vacation experiences. In today’s modern world, taking a train can seem like a waste of time but there are some train rides out there that are a getaway unto themselves.  If you’re thinking about checking a great train journey off your travel bucket list, then here are a few suggestions to get you on the right track.

Glacier Express

This 8 hour trip is a great way to spend a day just unwinding and relaxing as you view the spectacular snow covered mountains around you.  The Glacier Express travels through 91 tunnels and 291 bridges on its way from St. Moritz to Zermatt, two mountain resorts in the Swiss Alps.  One impressive structure to look out for is the Landwasser Viaduct, a 446 ft. long bridge that towers 65 ft. above a gorgeous valley.  You’ll want to have your camera ready for this breathtaking train getaway.

Venice-Simplon Orient Express

This famous train line has been immortalized in film and literature but nothing can compare to experiencing it in person.  This charmingly old-fashioned train line connects some of the best European cities and provides upscale accommodations to make you travel time as enjoyable and comfortable as possible.  While the three-day trip across France, Switzerland and Austria comes with a hefty price tag, this is one train adventure that’s worth splurging for.

Pride of Africa

Take a train tour of Africa on this luxury line billed as the most luxurious train in the world! The Pride of Africa shows its guests just that–the beauty, diversity and majesty of Africa at a relaxing, leisurely pace.  If you’re looking for a truly unique experience, check into the annual two week long expedition through areas including Cape Town, Victoria Falls and Kruger National Park.  For nature lovers of any age, this is a train voyage not to be missed.  As romantic as it is comfortable, the Pride of Africa can be a great honeymoon getaway or anniversary getaway!
