Albuquerque Attractions
Albuquerque is a city with a long, rich past and a vibrant present. Some of the major tourist attractions come about once a year when the city hosts various festivals. However, there are always plenty of sightseeing and adventure options for visitors, no matter what time of year they decide to come to Albuquerque.
Here are the best festivals and attractions that Albuquerque has to offer.
Budget
American International Rattlesnake Museum (202 San Felipe St) has an impressive collection of live rattlesnakes, as well as plenty of exhibits dedicated to this dangerous but (according to the museum) misunderstood serpent.
Rio Grande Nature Center (2901 Candelaria Road NW) is part of Rio Grande Valley State Park. Visitors will find cottonwood forests and ponds in the center and a network of trails throughout the park. There are also several well-equipped picnic areas.
The University of New Mexico campus hosts events from theater to sports to art exhibitions. Basketball is the most popular sport. Games are played at a semi-underground arena known as The Pit.
Value
Albuquerque Museum of Art and History (2000 Mountain Rd) is a good bet for families and also a good way to get a feel for the history of the area while still having some fun. There are old automobiles and artifacts like armor worn by 16th century Spanish soldiers.
Old Town is littered with souvenir shops. The atmosphere in this neighborhood, dominated by old buildings, is an attraction in and of itself. However, most of the shops are of the over-priced, knick-knack variety. If you are looking for some authentic Southwestern crafts, head outside of town to Bien Mur Indian Market Center (100 Bien Mur Drive NE).
During the winter, you can ski at several ski resorts in the Sandia Mountains. With its modern amenities and cultural attractions, Albuquerque makes a great base for ski excursions.
Splurge
New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science (1801 Mountain Rd NW) shows that Albuquerque’s history goes back further than Pueblos and Conquistadors. In addition to some interactive science exhibits, this museum focuses on paleontologists’ discoveries in the area.
The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta takes place in early October. This is the city’s premiere event and draws large crowds. The best time to visit Balloon Fiesta Park is early morning, when the balloons rise up en masse for the first time of the day. A less chaotic event is the Native American Gathering of Nations Pow-Wow at the University of New Mexico. Native American tribes from around the US bring their food and culture to Albuquerque for this popular event.
