Things to Do in Albuquerque
Albuquerque most recognizable traits are its desert location and the Southwestern flavor of its culture. These are major elements of the city, but not, by any means, the only reasons to visit. Special events are held throughout the year. Albuquerque is a city with a deep and storied history featuring Spanish colonists, the people of the Pueblo tribe, railways, Route 66, missile tests and hot air balloons. There is a modern side to the city as well. It is a center for commerce and pop culture for the Southwestern US.
Here are the best things to do during a visit to Albuquerque.
Budget
Explore the outdoors. The mountains and rivers around Albuquerque are beautiful. The Rio Grande Valley State Park has cottonwood trees galore as well as an extensive network of trails and several picnic areas. The foothills of the Sandia Mountains are also popular hiking and picnic venues. If you don’t want to walk, you can still appreciate the views of the area from the Sandia Peak Tramway, which runs up the mountainside during the day.
The University of New Mexico features some small specialty museums. The Maxwell Museum of Anthropology and the Meteorite and Geology Museums all have a decidedly academic bent, but are interesting nonetheless and offer tons of information.
Value
Wander Old Town. This historic district is mostly filled with overpriced shops aimed at tourists. However, it still carries a unique atmosphere. Just taking a stroll through the streets and window-shopping is a fun way to spend a couple of hours. If you want to buy something more authentic, head to Bien Mur Indian Market Center (100 Bien Mur Drive) for goods made locally by Native American craftsmen.
¡Explora! Science Center and Children's Museum (1701 Mountain Road NW) has been recognized repeatedly as being one of the best children’s museums in the country. The interactive activities are plentiful.
National Atomic Museum (1905 Mountain Road NW) contains exhibits about the nuclear program that was run nearby during the early days of nuclear research. The museum has exhibits about the military aspect of nuclear technology, but also some information on nuclear power and the use of nuclear energy for peaceful means.
Splurge
You can head to Albuquerque in October for the International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta. This is a popular and spectacular event. However, it is tough to see other sites in the city during Fiesta time because of the crowds. Several Albuquerque-based companies provide year-round balloon rides. These are expensive, but a once in a lifetime experience.
