Albuquerque is a thriving desert metropolis and the economic and cultural capitol of New Mexico. The city is characterized by its geography, by its Southwestern, Mexican, and Pueblo-influenced culture and by special events like an annual hot air balloon festival and the Gathering of Nations Pow-Wow.
Even if attending a special event is not part of your itinerary, Albuquerque has plenty of attractions in terms of culture, history, and outdoor activities. Here are some ways to help you streamline your trip to Albuquerque.
- The International Hot Air Balloon Festival takes place in early October each year. The weather is usually quite pleasant during the festival and it is a good time to visit. However, this is one of the most popular events in the Southwestern US. It is crowded in hotels and on the roads leading to Balloon Fiesta Park, where the balloons take-off and land. If you plan to come to Albuquerque during this time, book your hotel in advance and plan to take public transit to and from the event.
- Old Town, at Central & Rio Grande Ave, has some nice stores, but most of the retail is dominated by rather tacky souvenir shops. The old buildings create a kind of ambiance, but if you are looking to buy something authentic and of high quality, head to Bien Mur Indian Market Center. Many of the crafts here are hand-made and are sold by the artisans themselves.
- Restaurants in Albuquerque are cheaper than in many other major urban areas. A good meal can be found for under $10. Don’t forego upscale eateries just because they are “upscale.” Take a peek at the menu and you might find a meal will cost you no more than $30.
- Check out the cultural museums like the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center (2401 12th Street NW) and the National Hispanic Cultural Center, (1701 4th St. SW). These places give some insight into the past influences that created modern Albuquerque’s unique and diverse culture.
- Seeing the ruggedly beautiful outdoors around Albuquerque doesn’t have to mean getting outfitted for a dangerous desert expedition. The Sandia Peak Tramway runs every thirty minutes during the day and provides some awesome views of the Sandia Mountains.
- Be aware of the weather. Yes, it can get hot in the summer months, sometimes unbearably so. But is can get cool in the winter as well. The temperature often dips below freezing on winter nights and only climbs into the 40s during the day. Dress appropriately.
