Atlanta is a vast city with many unique neighborhoods and attractions. To some, the city’s size can be intimidating. Traffic, weather and the city layout can seem almost stifling. In Atlanta, more than in most other cities, having a well-planned itinerary is important. Here are some tips to make your vacation to the capitol of the New South a successful one.
- Atlanta has many distinct neighborhoods. Attractions are not centered in any one place. It might be helpful to think of Atlanta’s different districts as boroughs, like those in New York City. Each one is worth a visit for different reasons. Most tourists tend to gravitate towards Downtown, Midtown, Buckhead and Atlantic Station.
- Be aware of the weather. Atlanta has hot summers with heavy humidity. If heat isn’t your thing, spring and fall are the best times to visit. Despite its southern location, Atlanta is not immune to cold winters. Temps drop below freezing on winter nights. If your definition of a pleasant winter day includes sun and temperatures in the thirties and forties, then winter in Atlanta is a good fit for you.
- Try to balance historic and modern sites. The Downtown and Midtown areas are the best places to see the cosmopolitan side of Atlanta, while Highland Avenue and Buckhead offer reminders of the city’s past. In most residential neighborhoods, old and new are mixed seamlessly.
- There is a special deal for tourists called The Atlanta City Pass. The $69 pass includes admission to 5 area attractions: Georgia Aquarium, New World of Coca-Cola, Zoo Atlanta, Inside CNN Studio Tour, and Atlanta Botanical Gardens. It is a good deal as long as you actually visit each site.
- There are festivals and special events every month of the year in Atlanta. ATLart showcases the best visual artists in the area. It takes place each winter. The Dogwood Festival is a children’s event that is held each March in the city’s parks. Other events include the Atlanta Jazz Festival, Atlanta Film Festival, and Georgia Shakespeare Festival.
- Getting around Atlanta can be tough. Daytime trips on the MARTA (the city’s rapid transit system, which has a network of buses and light rail lines) are convenient, especially if you are visiting major sites in Downtown or Midtown. It is best to avoid the trains and buses at night. There are plenty of taxis around most nightspots. To explore the city in depth, it is necessary to rent a car. Just be aware that there are traffic problems during morning and evening rush hours.
