Auckland is located on the North Island of New Zealand and boasts a temperate year-round climate and a wealth of things to see and do.  One of the country's largest international airports is located in Auckland, and you can find a variety of upscale hotels, budget-friendly motels and bed and breakfasts within a short drive from most of the attractions.  Whether you're visiting Auckland for the first time, or heading to the island for a return visit, here are some tips to make your trip as safe and enjoyable as possible:

1. Bring a waterproof jacket and warm clothing between May and September.  This is Auckland's 'winter', and although it's still fairly mild, you may get chilly in the early morning and late evening.  Pack a couple of sweaters, a poncho and light jacket to stay comfortable.

2. Wear sunscreen even on cloudy days.  The sun's powerful UV rays are present year round, so protect your skin by wearing sunscreen even on cloudy days.  If you are particularly sensitive to the sun and burn easily, make sure you wear extra when you're out in the water.

3. Avoid drinking water from lakes or ponds.  If you're camping in any of the natural parks, avoid drinking water from the lakes or ponds, unless you have boiled it first and are using a water filter.  This will lower your risk of diarrhea and Giardia, a water-borne parasite.

4. Remember to drive on the left hand side of the road.  You can use your foreign driver's license in New Zealand, but just make sure you drive on the left and give way to all traffic approaching from the right.

5. Locate a visitor information centre or booth.  Auckland is home to dozens of visitor information centers that are part of a large network, and these are open 7 days per week.  Find out about local events and activities, or stop by for directions if you are lost; the friendly representatives are more than willing to help.
