Barbados is the easternmost Caribbean island and has become one of the most visited exotic destinations in the world. Many of its British roots are prevalent throughout the island, and you can visit a number of historic sites such as old sugar plantations, rum factories and the beautiful wildlife reserves. It's a leisure destination that offers a wealth of things to see and do, but there are some important things to keep in mind as a foreigner. Here are some travel tips to make sure your stay in Barbados is as enjoyable as possible:
1. Learn the lingo. Natives of Barbados are called Bajans, and streets are referred to as 'Gaps'. Most people will greet you with a 'good morning' or 'good evening' the moment you enter a restaurant, store or even passing them on the street. Keep this in mind as you're traveling about and mingling with the locals.
2. Barbados does have a high-rain season. If you're traveling to Barbados anytime between June and October, you will need to pack a poncho and light rain gear. Barbados has a tropical climate year round, but you can expect rain showers and storms rolling through the island in the late summer and early Fall months.
3. Visit Bridgetown for an historic excursion. If you want to learn about the rich history and culture of Barbados, make sure a trip to Bridgetown is on the list. This area of the island is home to dozens of gothic and colonial buildings, antique shops and historical sites.
4. Spend at least a day exploring the caves. Barbados is home to several miles of underground caves that are open to the public. Head out for a half-day or full-day excursion with a guided tour of the Harrison's caves and other natural sites around the lagoons and beaches.
5. The water is safe to drink. The water on the island is filtered by the coral limestone rock so it's perfectly safe to drink. You'll need to drink lots of water in this tropical climate, so pack a water bottle to prevent dehydration.
