Belize City is the largest city in the country of Belize and is surrounded by beautiful aquamarine waters and sandy shores. The city is home to several historic sites, and is most famous for the Mayan ruins and luxury lodges that are scattered in and around the city. If you're visiting Belize City for the first time or are returning for another trip, here are some important travel tips that will make your visit that much more enjoyable:

1.  You can use U.S. dollars in most places.  Most tourist hotspots and museums in downtown Belize will accept U.S. dollars, but you'll need the Belize Dollar if you're traveling to the lodges and cayes around the city.  Keep in mind that most people use Belize City as a transportation hub to get to the cayes and beaches, so this is the place to track down a bank and exchange any currency before you head out of the city.

2.  Visit Fort George for souvenirs.  There are only a few souvenir shops in the city, and most of them can be found in the tourism village inside Fort George.  Head here to pick up locally made crafts, souvenirs and postcards.

3. Stay at an eco-village if you're an outdoor enthusiast.  If you don't want to stay at one of the pricey lodges or resorts in Belize's rainforest areas, head to the Orchid Garden Eco-Village a few miles form Belize City for affordable rates and a wealth of outdoor activities.  You can explore San Pedro Placencia and Caye Caulker easily with an overnight stay at this popular eco-resort.

4. Pick up maps and brochures from the Belize Tourist Board.  The Belize Tourist Board is located at mile 3 ½ on the Northern Highway right near the center of the city, and features dozens of maps, brochures and fliers that can make it easier to plan your trip.  The office is open Monday through Friday, and is a great place to get some basic information about tourist sites and local events.

5. Spend a good portion of your trip on walking tours.  There are several great historic sites and attractions to explore in the heart of the cultural center of Belize, so make some time to take a walking tour of the city to see several shopping sites, cultural attractions and tourist hotspots on foot.
