Berlin is one of the most culturally diverse and urban cities in Germany, and offers a myriad of activities and sights for tourists. It's home to over 150 museums and dozens of historical sites, but is also famous for its sizzling nightlife scene and diverse assortment of European and Asian-fusion restaurants. Whether you're visiting Berlin for business or leisure, here are some important travel tips to keep in mind:
1. Plan for 24-hour entertainment. Berlin has more bars, cafes and restaurants than any other European city and many of them are open 24 hours a day. Plan accordingly so you can make the most of the nightlife scene.
2. Attend a beer festival. Berlin is home to some of Germany's biggest beer festivals and gatherings, and attending one of these is a cultural experience in itself. Find out where an upcoming event is taking place and plan to spend at least half the day sampling beer, enjoying the live music and dancing with the locals!
3. Don't tip at restaurants. Service costs are usually tallied into the final bill, so there's no need to tip your server, even at a café. Just pay the price on the bill, and leave it at that.
4. Try some ethnic food. While you do want to make time for classic German restaurants and European fare, don't miss out on some of the area's best ethnic foods. Indian, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Asian restaurants are scattered throughout the city, and serve up some of the tastiest eats in Europe.
5. Make room for the traditional Fruhstuck. Make sure you try at least one serving of the traditional German breakfast called the 'Fruhstuck'. This consists of a grand buffet of buttered eggs, potato cakes, schnitzel, fresh rolls and sausage. It's the perfect way to kick off a relaxing day and enjoy some fresh, home-cooked food. Many hotels and area restaurants serve this special menu on a daily basis.
