Bern is famous for its wide medieval walkways, cultural traditions and bustling flea markets.  It's been named one of the World Cultural Heritage cities and is best known as the capital of Switzerland.  If you want to experience Old Europe firsthand and learn about the Swiss government and famous artists, this is your city to explore.  Here are some important travel tips to keep in mind when traveling to Bern, Switzerland:

1. Stick with a slow and steady pace.  The locals don't believe in hurrying about, so take the time to take in all that the city has to offer at a slow and steady pace.  You can stay at restaurants well after you've paid your bill, and take your time when navigating the streets; it's all a part of the local culture.

2. Visit the local markets.  Make sure you take the time to visit at least one local market so you can pick up freshly made Swiss chocolate, collectibles and freshly baked goodies.  These markets are scattered throughout the city and typically begin in the early morning hours.

3.  Don't rent a car.  You'll be much better off exploring the city on foot; if you do need to travel a great distance, hop onto a bus or take a cab so you can avoid dealing with any traffic.

4.  Take a guided nature walk.  Bern is home to hundreds of acres of lush forests, so it would be a shame to miss out on the nature experience during your visit.  Take a guided nature walk through one of the forests to see the sparkling lakes and beautiful foliage up close.

5.  Attend a local event.  Bern is home to the famous Ziebelemarit onion festival, and the Feats of Klee, an art festival that attracts thousands of visitors each year.  There's always a grand event each season, so plan your trip around one if you can.
