Bras d'Or Lake is one of the most visited sites in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, and surrounded by majestic hills, lakes and streams. Though this area isn't necessarily a tourist town, there are some natural sites and attractions to explore.  From the scenic trails and driving routes wrapping around Cape Breton, to the relaxing waterfront views around the lake, here's where you'll find some of the best attractions around Bras d'Or Lake, Nova Scotia:

The Miners Museum
The Miners Museum captures the history of coal mining in the Cape Breton area; many of the exhibits showcase what life was like in the early 18th century. You can take a guided tour of this museum to learn about the legends and history of the mines, and even see what miner family housing looked like.

The Fortress of Louisbourg
The Fortress of Louisborg is the largest historical reconstruction in North American, giving you a chance to see exactly what life was like in the early 1700s.  The venue is a recreation of the town in the early 18th century, and you'll get to meet people in traditional costumes, and even enjoy a traditional meal at area restaurants.

Ceilidh Trail
If you're a folk music aficionado, head to the Ceildh Trail located on the Cabot trail to listen to traditional folk music and songs.  The pubs, bars and the town hall that are situated on this part of the trail host a number of live music events throughout the week, making it an idyllic destination to socialize with the locals.

Whitney Pier Museum
The Whitney Pier Museum was built in 1988 to showcase the photographs and artifacts of the trails. The museum offers tours and special events throughout the year, and is a great place to learn about the history of the pier and the rich history of trading in Cape Breton.

Cossit House
The Cossit House Museum is located in Sydney on Cape Breton Island, and was once the home of the first Anglican minister to live and work in Sydney. The house was built in 1787, and is believed to be the oldest building in Sydney. You can take a tour of the house to learn about colonial family life in the early 18th century.
