Cleveland is a city filled with attractions.  Though it is known as part of the Rust Belt (the collection of Mid-Eastern industrial cities struggling in a post-industrial country) Cleveland has a surprisingly attractive blend of history and contemporary culture.  Gaudy museums like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame are tourist attractions, but the contemporary arts scene, unique cuisine, and exciting pro sports teams offer a taste of modern Cleveland.  This welcoming city is full of unexpected attractions.

During its industrial renaissance, Cleveland was a center for architecture in the US.  The brass railings, inlays, and the soaring atrium at The Arcade are perfect examples of 1920s architecture and grandiose interior design.  The Peter B. Lewis building on the campus of the Case-Weatherhead School was designed by architectural luminary Frank Gehry.  The Terminal Tower was once one of America’s tallest buildings.  It does not measure up to modern standards in terms of height, but is a prime example of industrial era skyscrapers. It is possible to get some great views of Lake Erie and downtown Cleveland from the top-floor’s observation deck.

HealthSpace Cleveland is the nation’s first museum dedicated to health and health sciences.  It recently merged with the Cleveland Museum of Natural History (see below), but retains its unique niche.

The West Side Market (across from the Cuyahoga River on W. 25th St.) is a throwback to the days when everyone shopped at specialty stores.  The shops and food stalls at the market feature food products and specialties from all of the city’s ethnic groups, including Irish, Russian, German, and Lebanese.  Newer immigrants from Eastern Europe and East Asia are represented as well.

Another blast from Cleveland’s past is the Rockefeller Cultural Gardens.  The gardens are divided into different sections and represent the many cultural and immigrant communities that have called Cleveland home over the years.  A road winds through the area, setting the scene for an idyllic drive.

Splurge

The Cleveland Indians are one of the more popular baseball teams in the US.  They regularly fill Progressive Field for summertime home games.  The Cleveland Cavaliers currently have NBA superstar LeBron James on their roster.  The Browns (NFL) are the local hard-luck franchise.  All these teams are hot tickets in the city, but the experience of a home game in Cleveland is usually quite memorable.

Cleveland Museum of Natural History, which is part of the University Circle area, has an extensive array of exhibits, including a collection of dinosaur fossils and a working observatory.
