Despite being the home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cleveland’s nightlife scene is not dominated by screeching guitar solos and long haired front men. Visitors are more likely to find microbreweries, blues bars and friendly taverns. Live music is part of the mix, but certainly not the only form of nighttime entertainment. Here are the hottest, the most laid back, and most unique nightspots in Cleveland.

Budget

Great Lakes Brewery (in Ohio City) is one of the most notable micro-breweries in the US. The restaurant has a decent menu and laid back atmosphere, but the award-winning brews are the biggest draw.

The Barking Spider (Juniper Road) is a popular hangout among college age revelers. Aside from a good selection of beer, including local brews and imported favorites, The Spider serves up live blues and rock seven nights per week. The best local and regional singer/songwriters usually get the prime weekend slots.

Value

Harbor Inn Bar (1219 Main Ave) is a popular local haunt. This is neither a chain bar nor a tourist spot. Visitors who choose Harbor Inn will get a taste of the local Cleveland pub scene. In addition to the friendly atmosphere, the bar has a huge selection of imported, domestic and micro-brewed beers and a large menu featuring mostly Eastern European dishes.

The Agora Ballroom (Midtown) hosts rock and indie acts nightly. It is usually necessary to purchase tickets ahead of time, especially if the main act has regional or national notoriety. The Agora is one of the best Cleveland area concert venues and has played host to some major acts during its run.

The Winking Lizard is a local chain bar known for its selection of imported beers. As many as 150 beers from around the world are featured, including offerings from Belgium, Germany and the US’s best micro-brewers. The food is average, but the selection of quality suds can’t be beat, even by local microbreweries.

Splurge

La Cave du Vin is one of the finest area wine bars. Its biggest attraction is its extensive wine cellar, but this classy nightspot also has a decent selection of local micro-brews and imported ales. The kitchen dishes out pasta salads and a diverse array of cheese platters.

The Beachland Ballroom hosts national acts of the singer/songwriter variety with the occasional punk act thrown in. Large, headlining bands take the stage in the ballroom, but there is an adjoining tavern that also has live music (and a more laid-back vibe).
