Cleveland has a surprisingly diverse restaurant scene. Its long history as an urban melting pot for European and Near Eastern cultures has created an exciting culinary atmosphere that still exists today. Newer immigrants from East Asia and Latin America have also contributed to the restaurant culture that Cleveland now enjoys. The result is an exciting mix of local favorites, Old World specialties, and ethnic eateries.
Here are Cleveland’s best eats:
Budget
Superior Pho and #1 Pho (3100 block of Superior Ave) are local favorites when it comes to Vietnamese Cuisine. Thick, hearty beef noodle soups are a great value at around $5 per bowl and the light stir-fries and spicy fish dishes round out the menus at these two popular eateries.
Diner-style restaurants are still a major part of Cleveland’s eating culture. Ruthie and Moe's (E. 40th Street) is actually not as much of a “greasy spoon” as its décor might suggest. It is housed in a renovated classic diner building in Cleveland’s Midtown District. The atmosphere is casual and the food above average.
Value
Little Italy is home to some of the most authentic Old World food in Cleveland. Small, welcoming restaurants like Trattoria and Mama Santa's are great places to get your pasta and pizza fix without ruining your travel budget.
A more modern take on Italian cuisine is Bar Centro (1948 W. 25th). This eatery combines a fine selection of wines with updated versions of Italian classics. It often earns rave reviews from local media and food bloggers for its pasta dishes and pizza. Wine tastings take place in the evenings.
Li Wah (Asia Plaza, Cleveland’s Chinatown) serves up the city’s best dim sum. It gets crowded, especially on weekends, but it is worth putting up with the chaos to get a hold of the many delicious appetizer-sized dishes coming out of the kitchen.
Splurge
Nighttown (12387 Cedar Road) is an upscale jazz club that is one of the finest of its kind between New York and Chicago. Top regional and national touring acts grace the stage and the classic/classy menu features an assortment of fine-dining staples.
The Baricelli Inn is a fine-dining establishment in the most classic sense. The menu is a mix of American and European gourmet dishes. As far as food goes, there is nothing too exciting, but the overall experience, bolstered by the venue (a renovated mansion), is one of the best in Cleveland. Baricelli has consistently earned a 4 diamond rating from AAA.
