Despite a recent renaissance, Cleveland is still mostly known as an industrial city whose best days are in the past. While it is true that factories dominate the city, there are also interesting cultural and geographic elements in Cleveland. The art and architecture from Cleveland’s economic heyday are everywhere, making this a good city for history buffs and design aficionados. A small but visible resurgence of this art and culture movement is also evident. Add sports, music and waterways into the mix and Cleveland is one of the most surprising urban destinations in the Mid-Eastern US.

The Arcade is a 1920’s era architectural masterpiece built with an investment from the Rockefellers. The 5-storey atrium, metal and brass inlays and railings, and the marble walkways make this one of the most stunning and gaudy historic buildings in Cleveland, as well as one of the finest examples of 1920s architecture in the entire country.
Cleveland Museum of Art (11150 East Blvd) is a free museum with a diverse and extensive collection of art. The exhibit halls contain everything from authentic medieval armor to a collection of Chinese art to a re-casting of the original work The Thinker by Rodin. The Museum of Contemporary Art (8501 Carnegie Ave) shows that Cleveland is still an artsy city, even though the wealthy industrialists who funded the city’s first art renaissance are now gone.
Value
Great Lakes Science Center is located right on the shores of Lake Erie. The OmniMax Theater is a huge draw, as are the interactive, kid-friendly exhibits. The Center also has displays about regional technologies and the physical and ecological environments of Lake Erie.
The Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum (University Circle) has an impressive collection of classic cars and antique planes. Crawford is connected to the Western Reserve Historical Society, which operates a museum at University Circle as well as other sites around the city, such as The Hale Farm and Village, which is a 19th century, living history experience in Bath, Ohio.
Splurge
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a relatively recent addition to Cleveland’s museum line-up. Built during Cleveland’s 1980s resurgence, it is a museum that hardcore music fans will find appealing, but everyone else will find a bit anti-climactic. At $22 general admission, it is one of the more expensive activities in the city.
The Playhouse Square is one of the largest performance centers in the US. The offerings range from stand-up comedy to dance to Broadway musicals and dramatic theater. Tickets are available online.
