Colorado Springs Travel Tips

Colorado Springs is the second largest city in Colorado.  Its main attraction is its proximity to virtually limitless outdoor adventure activities and beautiful natural sights of the Southern Rockies.  The mountainous geography can bring awe to visitor's minds, but it can also bring hassles and even danger.  It is also important to keep in mind that Colorado Springs is not only about outdoor activities.  Its urban attractions are equal to its spectacular scenery.

Here are some tips for travelers who want to experience the best of Colorado Springs, inside the city limits and beyond:

1. Colorado Springs is quite safe in terms of crime.  However, driving in Colorado is notoriously dangerous.  The state has one of the highest death rates from car accidents of any state in the country.  That fact is usually enough to keep visiting drivers in a cautious and safe frame of mind when they are behind the wheel.

2. It is easy to get carried away with all the outdoor activities that are available to visitors in Colorado Springs.  While there are plenty of easily accessible trails and bicycle routes, it is best to be cautious.  The city is a haven for experienced climbers, kayakers, and mountain bikers.  Inexperienced adventurers can easily find guided tours for cycling down Pike's Peak, challenging the rapids on the Arkansas River, or climbing steep rock walls.  Experienced guides raise the safety quotient exponentially.  There will always be time for solo adventures once you gain some experience.

3. Though it is less crowded and more convenient, Colorado Springs Airport is usually more expensive than Denver International.  The larger airport is connected with Colorado Springs via Interstate Highway 25 and also via the Front Range Express Bus Service.

4.    You don't even have to leave the city limits to see great scenery.  Pike's Peak is visible from most areas of the city.  Seven Falls Park, a privately owned scenic spot with waterfalls and walking trails, offers a chance to get into nature without venturing into the mountains.

5. It is necessary to have a car to travel around Colorado Springs.  The Mountain Metro Transit bus system services Colorado Springs.  Though central parts of the city are easily accessible on the bus, service is not widespread enough to be useful to tourists, especially those who want to explore outside the city and in the mountains.

6. To streamline your tip as much as possible, book tours before you leave.  If you plan to climb a cliff or join a whitewater rafting trip, booking before you leave can save you the headache of trying to organize a tour once you arrive.
