Fresno Nightlife
Fresno does not compare to California’s larger cities in terms of nightlife. Of course, that might be a good thing for people tired of the “same old club and lounge scene.” That said, if you know where to look, Fresno has a very respectable nightlife for a city of its size. There are bars, clubs and live music venues as well as a restaurant scene that is quite unique. Add theaters and festive evening farmers markets to the mix and Fresno’s image goes from quiet, mid-sized city to energetic cultural center.
Here are the diverse offerings that Fresno offers after sundown.
Budget
Zapp’s Park (1105 N Blackstone Ave) is a good live music venue. This is a hole-in-the-wall type place, but the vibe is extremely laid back and welcoming. The music is good and the bartenders friendly.
Crossroads Lounge (3315 N Cedar Ave) is a live music venue that features weekly shows from country music acts and alternative rockers. If either one of those genres doesn’t fit your musical tastes, there is pool and darts in the adjoining bar area.
Value
The Elephant Bar is a theme restaurant with a decent bar and a family-style restaurant. This is not a place to find a raucous nightlife scene but it is a good place to grab a few drinks and maybe a meal in a friendly and laid-back environment.
Club Fred (1426 N Van Ness Ave) consistently brings in quality musical acts from amongst the local and regional pool of talent. This is a smallish venue that is favored by the city’s hip 20-something crowd. Dance parties are held on non-band nights. This is the best place to get a feel for Fresno’s social scene.
The Dirty Olive is a hip martini bar. This is one of the most popular new bars. It caters mostly to Fresno’s sophisticated professional set. The Olive serves excellent food in addition to numerous variations of the martini.
Splurge
The Landmark (644 E. Olive) is a high-end eatery that also has a classy, but not over-the-top bar. If you are looking for a nice blend of low-key and upscale, this is it.
There is a good sushi scene in Fresno. Sushi Day (7745 N 1st St) is one of the better sushi joints in town because of their good mix of skilled chefs, pleasant staff and welcoming ambiance. Wassabi (1085 E Herndon Ave) is another worthwhile stop-off on the sushi circuit.
