Fresno Restaurants
Fresno is a great place for those who love to eat. Despite being a mid-sized city, many major cooking traditions are represented. Middle Eastern, Chinese, and Thai restaurants are an important part of the eating scene. Because it is a major agricultural center, many restaurants feature fresh ingredients year-round. Mexican food and traditional American home-cooking are the most common types of cuisine. Even wandering through the stalls at the various farmers markets around Fresno can lead to a great meal.
Here is where to find the freshest, most exciting eats in Fresno.
Budget
Irene's Cafe (747 E Olive Ave) is an independently owned coffee shop that has become quite popular amongst area residents because of its welcoming atmosphere and home-cooked breakfast and lunch offerings.
Dai Bai Dang (7736 N. Blackstone Ave) is a large and popular Chinese restaurant near Fresno’s retail district. This place can get crowded, but the number of patrons is a testament to the quality and authenticity of the food. Luby (1075 E Bullard Ave) is a much smaller, less chaotic Chinese restaurant with food that equals Dai Bai Dang in deliciousness.
Thai House (1069 E Shaw) is one of the better Thai restaurants in town. It is a family-run eatery that has a good sized menu of authentic favorites. As far as value is concerned, this is one of the better places in the city.
Value
Senses World Cuisine (1110 N. Van Ness) is a popular health-food restaurant. Tapas are served daily and the menu filled with both traditional and creative vegetarian options.
Max's Bistro & Bakery (1784 W Bullard) is a relaxed, bistro that serves up California-style cooking. Most of the items on the menu also show a bit of French influence. This is definitely bistro-style dining, but without the nose-in-the-air hipness one might expect from this type of place.
Splurge
Campagnia (1185 E. Champlain Drive) is an upscale eatery with a good menu and an even better atmosphere. Many patrons forego a full meal and simply relax at the bar with a drink and some appetizers.
Slates (7455 N. Fresno St) is a hip upscale eatery featuring new American dishes. The man behind this restaurant is Roy Harland, a local celebrity chef. Though this is one of the finer restaurants in the city, the food is not as overpriced as it is at similar places in other cities.
The Landmark (644 E. Olive) is a classy restaurant with contemporary takes on old favorites. There is also a well-appointed bar inside.
