Fresno is often relegated to the second string of cities when it comes to California tourist destinations. For many people who do pass through the city, it is merely a pit stop on the way to Yosemite National Park. But with a little planning, Fresno can be a worthwhile city to spend time in, whether you are on the way to the Sierras or simply looking for an undiscovered spot to spend an urban vacation. Here are some tips to help those unfamiliar with Fresno enjoy their vacation.
- Fresno is dry and hot during the summer. Winter is pleasant, with daytime highs in the low 60s. Spring and Fall offer the most pleasant temperatures, but occasional rain storms.
- Fresno is a great place to base yourself for a trip to Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks. Both are within driving distance. A vehicle fee is charged to each car that enters the parks.
- Fresno has a bus system that services most of the city. While it is convenient for the local workforce, if you are visiting for a limited amount of time, renting a car or driving your own is all but necessary. This is especially true if you plan to visit the natural areas outside of the city limits.
- Traffic in Fresno is not as terrible as it is in California’s other major cities. Roads get crowded during rush hour, but things never come to a standstill.
- The national parks are only a small portion of the natural attractions in the area. Yosemite is spectacular, but other areas in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas, frequented by Fresno locals, are also quite beautiful. In the summer, the cooler temperatures in the Sierras draw local residents out on the weekends. If you want a less crowded hike or picnic, try visiting the mountains during the week..
- Fresno has a lively theater and performance art scene. The Rogue Festival is a fringe theater festival that takes place each March. It draws performance artists from all over the region and even some international talent. Shakespeare in the Park takes place each summer from June through September.
- Fresno is an important center for agriculture. Tourists can get a taste of this at the various farmers markets around the city and also in the area’s wineries and gardens. Some markets offer food and entertainment as well as produce.
