As the largest city in the state of Hawaii, Honolulu is the center of the islands' commerce and culture.  It is also the place where most tourists first set foot.  Some of these visitors never leave the city, choosing to spend their vacations on the beaches and in the shopping and nightlife areas of Waikiki.  However, the attractions of Honolulu go well beyond that densely populated strip of sand.  Here is the best of Honolulu, both on the beach and beyond the beach. 

Budget

The major beach in Honolulu is Waikiki.  This world famous seafront draws tourists from all over the world.  Aside from the beach blanket scene and the numerous sand-based attractions, Waikiki is a good place for casual surfers and body-boarders to take to the waves.  In addition, Waikiki is the base for companies that provide other water sports experiences such as scuba diving, sailing, sea kayaking and snorkeling. 

`Iolani Palace (364 South King Street) is a fully restored historic building that was the final residence of the Hawaiian royal family during the 19th century.  Today, it is open Tuesday through Saturday and serves as a museum and a monument to Hawaii's history, culture and independent spirit.   

Value

International Market Place (2330 Kalakaua Ave) is a market consisting of over 100 stalls selling the usual assortment of Hawaiian shirts, sandals and tropically themed souvenirs.  The major attraction here, if you aren't in the market for colorful apparel, is the banyan trees that line the outside of the market.  Also, with all the tourists, there is a mildly festival atmosphere. 

The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu (411 Makiki Heights Dr) might house the largest collection of contemporary art in the state, but there is nothing contemporary about the aged estate where the museum is located.  In addition to galleries of modern art, there is a beautiful garden area outside the museum.  It is possible to see picturesque and panoramic views of Honolulu and the sea from these grounds.

Splurge

Horseback riding is a popular tourist activity on the coastline and in the interior lands outside the city.  Much of this land is strikingly beautiful and not at all crowded.  Riding excursions can take a few hours or a few days.  The green, tropical mountain valleys are the most popular route for guided rides.  Similar trips are also available for cyclists.   
 
Hawaii's main industry is tourism.  Because of this, there are tours and services virtually everywhere.  These range from boat cruises and helicopter rides to simple surfing lessons or kayak excursions.  It is easy to make your own attractions by simply stopping by your hotel's concierge and deciding which part of Hawaii's menu of activities is worth a try.
