Kansas City is not on many tourists’ radars. A quiet Midwestern city with a jazz-infused past, K.C. is a surprising metropolis in many ways. Like other mid-sized cities, it has experienced its share of economic and cultural ups and downs. Certain areas are now on the upswing, especially the revitalized Downtown and the 18th and Vine Historic District. Kansas City is certainly heavy with history, but also characterized by a burgeoning contemporary arts scene and plenty of live music. It is an exciting sports town as well.
Here are the best historic and modern attractions in Kansas City.

City Market Area (also known as River Market) has benefited from recent renovations. The run-down, seedy scene has been replaced by a farmer’s market and a large concert area. Each summer, national acts take the stage for live music shows and the farmer’s market offers rows and rows of fresh produce.
The Harley-Davidson Final Assembly Plant (11401 N Congress Ave) offers free tours daily. The tours last for about sixty minutes and feature a behind the scenes look at the making of the famous motorcycles.
Value
National World War I Museum and Liberty Memorial (100 W. 26th Street) is the first exhibit hall of its kind in the country. Aside from taking a look into the world’s first large-scale armed conflict, the museum also has a tower that acts as an observation deck. A combined ticket for the tower, museum and memorial costs $10. This is a relatively new museum, opening in late 2006.
BB's Lawnside BBQ (1205 85th Street) has a fine menu of sauce slathered meats. What sets it apart from other area BBQs is its live blues music. Local and regional bands who take the stage make this one of the city’s best live music venues.
Splurge
The Kansas City Chiefs (NFL) and the hard-luck Kansas City Royals (Major League Baseball) are the city’s most popular pro sports franchises. The Kansas City Wizards have had some success in Major League Soccer. Royals and Wizards tickets are not hard to come by, but it can take some work to get in to the Chiefs’ home games. Tailgating before Chiefs’ games is a K.C. institution. No ticket is required for joining in this part of a football-filled Sunday.
The Drum Room, a storied jazz venue that opened in the 1940s, hosts jazz acts on the weekends. There are also performances at the American Jazz Museum’s theater. Admission to the museum itself (does not include performances) is only $6.
