>> Kansas city nightlife
Kansas City has long been a haven for high-caliber jazz and blues artists. Despite this reputation, the city has a diversified and wide-spread nightlife scene that goes well beyond these two musical genres. Different neighborhoods have different nighttime vibes. From college taverns, near the city’s institute of higher education, to the laid-back neighborhood BBQ and beer joints to Downtown’s high-end lounges, Kansas City has something for everyone that likes to play after the sun goes down.
Here are the best of KC’s diverse nightlife options.
Budget
The Quaff (1010 Broadway) is a large and popular bar with a decidedly Midwestern vibe. The waitresses wear form fitting uniforms and the beer and traditional bar food are above average in terms of quality.
On the first Friday of every month, galleries in the Crossroads Arts District open their doors to the general public and display their best works. In addition to getting a taste of KC’s art scene, First Friday goers get to experience the Crossroads at its best. The area’s bars, restaurants and cafés are full well into the night and the scene is quite lively.
Value
The Cashew (Grand and 20th) is a laid-back two-storey bar in the Crossroads Arts District. This large, airy bar hosts live music on occasion and is a happening spot on the weekends, especially during the First Friday Art Crawl. In the summer, the windows are opened wide, creating an atmosphere that is not unlike that of an open-air bar in a tropical country.
Bulldog (17th and Main) is another Crossroads hotspot. This place is more about cocktails and cool-looking appetizer plates (when compared to the Cashew), but the food is great and the crowds make it a fun weekend hang-out.
Splurge
The Drum Room in Downtown Kansas City is a famous and historic music venue that played host to Sinatra and other jazz luminaries in its heyday. Now it is a fully renovated restaurant and lounge. Visitors can still hear live music on Friday and Saturday evenings. The restaurant is pricy, but there is no cover charge, so you can sip a lowball at the bar while enjoying the atmosphere and the tunes.
The Zebra Room is another downtown renovation. It is located in the historic Aladdin Hotel. Yes, the décor is based on a “zebra theme” but it is classy, not the 1980s throwback you might expect. The upscale vibe is enhanced by a mezzanine level martini bar.
