Kansas City is THE place for barbecue in the Midwestern US. There are more sauces, more cooking styles and more side dishes here than anywhere else in the world. For lovers of sauce-slathered meats, Kansas City is a wonderland. However, there are other cuisines in KC that deserve a mention. The city is home to some of the Midwest’s finest Italian eateries and a collection of high-end steakhouses. For those in search of a bit of nostalgia, KC has some old-school diners that are famous for their throwback food, classic décor and cheap prices.
Here are Kansas City’s best eats.
Budget
Many of the Kansas City barbecue joints that had success in their early days have grown into local chains. Arthur Bryant is a franchise that earned its way into local lore with its huge barbecue brisket sandwiches. Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbecue is as famous for its sides as for its meats and sauces. The suburban locations try to capture some of the flair of the original venue, which is still open in a converted warehouse in Martin City.
YJ's Snack Bar (128 W 18th Street) is located in the Crossroads Arts District. It draws an artsy crowd, especially during Thursday, Friday and Saturday, when it stay open all the time. There is a tiny seating area, but the live music and good food mean that it is always beyond full.
Value
Oklahoma Joe’s is one of the most famous Barbecue restaurants in the city. It is located in a gas station and liquor store (47th and Mission) and is known for its award-winning sauce. This place is short on traditional restaurant atmosphere, but its unique mode of operation makes it one of the most interesting eateries in KC.
Garozzo’s (Harrison St) is fine-dining, Italian style. Despite this tag, the welcoming Old World charm makes it as much a family-friendly eatery as a high-end restaurant. Classic Italian dishes make up a well-rounded menu.
Splurge
Amor de Brazil Fiery Steakhouse (11920 Metcalf Ave) serves some of the best cuts of meat in all of meat-crazy Kansas City. The South American rubs and marinades add to already flavorful menu items. This is a decidedly upscale restaurant with the quality reflected in the prices. Steak fans will find it a good value, though.
The Hereford House is another KC restaurant whose success has spawned a local chain. These restaurants are high-end and serve expertly prepared, quality cuts in a classic steakhouse atmosphere. There is nothing in the decor at any of the locations to suggest that this is a chain.
