Kansas City is characterized by sports, arts, numerous public fountains and broad boulevards. Despite not being known as a tourist city, KC has plenty to do beyond baseball and barbecue. Here are some tips to help would-be visitors plan their itineraries.
- Kansas City’s attractions spread out from downtown. Many museums, restaurants and nightlife venues are located either downtown or in the nearby River Market neighborhood. Other centrally located areas of interest include the Crossroads Arts District and the commercial and retail neighborhood around Union Station. Some of the residential areas outside of the city center have their own attractions as well.
- Like any big city, Kansas City has good neighborhoods and bad ones. Generally, areas that tourists and visitors will find interesting are safe both in the day and in the evening. It is best to avoid unfamiliar neighborhoods late at night, unless accompanied by a trusted local.
- Kansas City is located in an area of the country that sees frequent severe weather (mostly during the summer). Warning sirens sound in advance of severe thunderstorms and tornados.
- Kansas City is the unofficial capitol of barbecue. Many successful restaurants have branched out and now operate in multiple locations. These chains still serve the same food that made the restaurants famous in the first place, so do not think that heading to one of the suburban locations of restaurants like Fiorella's will lead to a less authentic or less satisfying experience.
- Check out the new Kansas City. Historic jazz venues like The Drum Room are still worth a visit, but the recently renovated downtown boasts a plethora of new clubs and upscale lounges. The “new KC nightlife scene” is, arguable, as exciting as the storied jazz-era happenings.
- Kansas City experiences extreme weather. Aside from dangerous summer thunderstorms, there is little to worry about in terms of severe weather. Heavy snowfall and below freezing temperatures are common during the winter months. In the summer, temperatures can hover near 100 degrees Fahrenheit for days at a time.
- Pitch Weekly is a free newspaper that features weekly nightlife listings, a concert calendar and reviews of local restaurants and clubs. If you plan to explore Kansas City after dark, this free paper can act as your menu.
- Kansas City has a bus system and there are taxis outside of most nightlife venues. However, like most cities of its size, Kansas City is best negotiated by car.
