Las Vegas can be one of the world’s most exciting cities. That is, as long as you know where to go and where to avoid. These tips can help you streamline your trip in order to maximize excitement and minimize contact with cheesy tourist traps.
- Learn age requirements. You must be 21 to enter casinos’ gaming areas. There are many shows that require you to be at least 18 to enter. Keep such rules in mind if you are traveling with a group or with a family. If you aren’t sure, call and ask beforehand.
- Taxi. Keep money in your travel budget for taxis. The monorail that plies the Strip is often crowded and can be quite slow. Any way you look at it, it is not worth the $5 ticket. Taxis are always a better option and are easy to flag any time of day or night.
- If you are going to see a show, especially Cirque de Soleil, book well in advance and use the web site of the hotel where the show is performed. If you are staying at the hotel, it might be worth it to call and see if you can get a discount on show tickets.
- Eat. There are some fine restaurants in Las Vegas. Some are unreasonably expensive, but many are a good value. Buffets at the major casinos are cheapest during breakfast and lunch time, even though the offerings are just as good as dinner. If you are on a budget (or need to pad your gambling bankroll), filling up at breakfast is the best way to get the most for your money.
- Don’t just look to the casinos and their hotels for nightlife. Bars like the Bunkhouse (downtown) and Double Down Saloon (4640 Paradise Road) are good bars with plenty of atmosphere and good value when it comes to drinks. Seamless (Tropicana Ave) is one of the more interesting clubs in town. It is happening on weekdays and after hours, when casino club shut down.
- Come during the week. Most people come to Vegas for the weekend. During the week, room rates are cheaper, casinos less crowded and shows easier to get tickets for. Of course, the energy of a Saturday night is what draws many visitors to Vegas.
- Live it up. Celeb hotspots like OPM and Tao are some of the coolest clubs in the country (if you want to be part of “the scene”). Expensive and exclusive, yes, but also hot.
