Long Beach has a unique nightlife scene. In many areas, there is a blue collar feel to the nighttime action that might seem out of place for the West Coast. However, people who visit these venues find the scene refreshingly relaxed. That said, if you are looking for stereotypical West Coast nightclubs and bars, LA is only a short drive away. There are even a handful of seen-and-be-seen venues in Long Beach itself.

Here are the best after-dark spots in Long Beach.

Budget

Taco Surf (5316 E 2nd St) is a laid back beach bar and taco restaurant in the Belmont Shores area. The pretension is pretty low and the food is more than decent.

Joe Jost's (2803 E. Anaheim Street) captures Long Beach’s blue collar side better than any other nightlife venue in town. A family run tavern with nearly nine decades in business, Joe’s is something of an institution. The food and cheap draft beers are only part of the attraction. The laid back atmosphere, pool table and home-style favorites like pickled eggs are equally important to the Joe’s experience.

Value

The Yard House (401 Shoreline Village Dr) is a dockside restaurant with an upscale vibe. If you get there during happy hour (3 to 6, weekdays), martinis are only $5, In general, the casual elements of Yard House win out over the upscale vibe. Entrees can reach $30, but with over 100 beers on tap, a great wine list, and some lower-priced options that are of respectable quality, this is a good place to make an evening of it.

Rock Bottom Brewery (1 Pine Avenue) is a local micro-brewery that serves some of the best suds in town. Despite its focus on adult beverages, the brewery also produces a very good root beer.

Splurge

Belmont Shores pedestrian shopping area is littered with bars and restaurants as well as retail shops. If you like to wander, this is probably one of the better places in Long Beach to do so.

The posh Naples neighborhood is home to numerous canals. Though it is not Venice, there are gondola rides that capture the spirit of these waterways. Rides run daily and cost $75 for two people, with a slight charge for additional passengers. This is a romantic cruise and a good way to get up-close to the multi-million-dollar homes in this part of the city. The cruises begin at (5437 E. Ocean Blvd). Reservations are required.
