Louisville Attractions
You might call Louisville a hybrid city. It is a city on the border of North and South that has absorbed plenty of culture from each. It is a city of great history and tradition, but also a progressive, modern place. These influences make Louisville a tremendously unique place with unique attractions.
Here are the most exciting attractions Louisville has to offer.
Budget
The Kentucky Derby is probably the most well-known event held in Louisville. The biggest and most watched horse race in the world, it is the centerpiece of many springtime trips to northern Kentucky. However, the race itself is only a small part of the festivities. There are other spectacles that, though they are not as famous as the big race, are equally exciting to those who witness them. The Great Balloon Race, the Great Steamboat Race, and an awe-inspiring fireworks show called Thunder over Louisville are some of these attractions. Some people get caught up in the celebrations and forget about the race entirely. For most citizens of Louisville, the Derby is simply an excuse to have a good time.
The many parks are also part of what makes Louisville such an attractive place. The city’s showcase park is Waterfront Park. It features fountains, forests and views of the Ohio River. There are walking trails throughout. Three older parks, Cherokee Park, Iroquois Park, and Shawnee Park, are also popular. These are littered with trails, playing fields, treed areas, and fountains.
Value
Louisville has several museums dedicated to it unique culture and almost legendary past. The Filson Museum displays a collection of historical artifacts that include diaries, household items and manuscripts. It is a must-visit for anyone who is at all interested in the history of the area.
Want something a little more unique? The small, offbeat Colonial Sanders Museum features exhibits about the founder of KFC. The Jim Beam Distillery Museum celebrates one of the states of Kentucky’s most famous beverages, bourbon. Many people might find these small places quirky, but they are a part the mainstream identity of Louisville.
Splurge
There are several attractions outside of Louisville worth visiting. Mammoth Cave National Park features the longest network of caves in the country. The park offers tours daily. The famous Fort Knox, home of the US gold reserve, is also near Louisville. It is a few hours’ drive to reach Fort Knox from Louisville’s city limits, but it is well within striking distance for those who want to take a day-trip.
