Miami is a city of many attractions. Though the beach and party scene often steal the spotlight, there is also a family-friendly side to this part of South Florida. Museums and a vibrant arts and music scene have earned the city its share of high-brow credibility.
Here are the best of Miami's diverse attractions.
Budget
Oleta River State Recreation Park (3400 N.E. 163rd Street) proves that you don't even have to leave the city to get a taste of South Florida's natural side. This is Miami's biggest urban park. It features trails, picnic spots and sports fields.
Little Havana is one of Miami's most colorful districts. Despite having a reputation for a high crime rate, this part of Miami is probably one of the most exciting and interesting to visit. The authentic Cuban food here is reasonably prices and of high quality. Street fairs, like the Calle Ocho festival, bring an element of excitement and a festive atmosphere to the neighborhood.
Value
Bayfront Park (301 Biscayne Blvd) has not one, but two amphitheaters. Concerts are held here year-round while festivities reach fever pitch during New Year when fireworks, parades and Orange Bowl festivities create an especially energetic atmosphere.
Miami Seaquarium (4400 Rickenbacker Causeway) is a nearly-40-acre aquarium featuring aquatic life from all over the world. The number of exhibits is so diverse and the venue so large that it would be possible to spend several hours, if not an entire day, wandering around.
Splurge
Lowe Art Museum (1301 Stanford Drive) has a complete collection of artifacts and artwork from all over the world. The paintings, sculptures and pottery are from every era since the time of the Greek empire. The Renaissance art exhibits are especially impressive, as is the collection of Asian and Latin American art.
The Port of Miami is one of the world's busiest container ports. It is also one of the busiest cruise ship terminals in the world. Virtually every cruise in the Caribbean begins at the Port of Miami. Depending on how much time you have, a 3-, 4- or 7-day cruise might still leave you with a few days to explore the city before the end of your travels.
CocoWalk (3015 Grand Ave) is an open-air mall in the Coconut Grove area of Miami. The mid- and high-end stores here are nice, but the major attraction is that stores are open until midnight and restaurants and bars until 2 a.m.
