Miami is a huge city known for its diverse population, warm weather and sexy beaches.  At the same time, this Southeastern metropolis is often in the news for its crime problems and severe hurricanes.  Here are some tips to help sun-seekers and snow-birds plan a safe and enjoyable trip to Miami.

1. Hurricane season lasts from April until October.  Since Florida's tourist high-season takes place in the winter months, most tourists naturally avoid hurricane season.  That said, low season travel will mean cheaper prices and lighter crowds.  Hurricanes are gigantic storms and are tracked for days, if not weeks, before landfall.  One or two might strike Florida per year, but with plenty of advanced warning, there is little danger for tourists.

2. Yes, the coverage in the media is based on truth: Miami has a crime problem.  Though it does have some of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the entire country, these areas are highly concentrated.  In most of the city, there is little evidence of the violence that takes place in these areas.

3. Nightclubs often double as restaurants.  There is no need to put on your best and head to the impossibly expensive "scene" nightclubs in the city.  Even the place where you eat dinner might double as a dance emporium once the kitchen closes.

4. Miami is a 24-hour city.  Many local restaurant and fast-food chains stay open for 24 hours.  You may even be able to get a bite at a popular upscale eatery after the restaurant area has turned into a nightclub with strobe lights and a packed dance floor.

5. Miami is a huge and sprawling city, but it is near plenty of popular natural sites.  Biscayne National Park and Everglades National Park are both within striking distance of the city and offer virtually limitless possibilities for getting in touch with nature.

6. Miami's beach scene can seem intimidating and non-family-friendly.  This is a true impression, but only because certain high profile beaches are heavy on sexy suits and beautiful bodies. The city's extensive coastline means that there are plenty of sandy spots for everyone.  The northern end of South Beach is quite quiet compared to the main beach.  There are often families here.

7. Just because Miami has an image of being a sun-kissed paradise doesn't mean it doesn't rain.  It rains frequently, especially during the summer and fall months.  Have an alternate plan for rainy days.
