Minneapolis is a city of both urban and natural attractions.  It boasts plenty of venues for shopping, numerous cafes, and places to enjoy the urban outdoors.  In addition, the city has the highest number of theater seats in the country outside of the New York borough of Manhattan, as well as an impressive list of live music venues. 

Here are the biggest and best attractions in Minneapolis.

Budget

Pleasant weather might stop and start in Minneapolis, but the eating scene is hot year-round.  The city's best culinary neighborhoods include Eat Street, a six block stretch of Nicollet Ave in the Uptown neighborhood that features Vietnamese, Caribbean, German and New American cuisine.  The Saint Anthony/Main Street neighborhood, directly across the river from downtown, features a good selection of fine dining establishments and laid-back bar-and-grill restaurants.

During the summer, many Minneapolis residents take advantage of the natural attractions in the city.  The collection of urban lakes draws visitors in search of opportunities for boating, beach-going, rollerblading and socializing.  The lake scene stretches into the night at nearby cafés and restaurants (many offering some form of outdoor seating).

Value

The Minnesota Zoo is one of the larger zoos in the Midwest.  Its extensive indoor exhibits and habitats make for excitement even if the weather outdoors in cold.  As a bonus, the zoo also hosts live music during the summer.  National reggae, blues, and roots rock acts perform at a beautiful, outdoor amphitheater. 

Mall of America is a major tourist attraction, though few locals actually come there to shop.  For many stores, the MoA is a place to showcase their products, not a place to sell them.  Still, having so many shops under the same roof makes for an interesting experience, even for window-shoppers.  The addition of a movie theater, bars, cafes and an amusement park help draw visitors in for an afternoon or evening of fun.  

Splurge

Nicollet Mall is a pedestrian only street in Downtown Minneapolis.  Upscale boutiques and restaurants cater to visitors, professionals, and weekend shoppers and revelers.  During the winter, most of the shops and restaurants can be accessed by the skyway, a series of indoor walkways that connect the buildings to one another. 

Downtown Minneapolis Theaters are part of the reason Minneapolis has the highest number of theater seats per capita in the Midwest, and is second only to Manhattan in the nation.  The Orpheum Theater hosts national touring shows and traveling drama and dance troupes, while the Guthrie has an in-house production team that stages new interpretations of classic plays.
