Budget

The lakes of Minneapolis are popular summertime destinations. Beaches and paved trails can get quite crowded, especially during summertime evenings. There is a very social atmosphere and the cafés and restaurants near the lakes usually get crowded once the sun sets.

The Walker Art Center is a nationally renowned art museum. Admission is free on the first Thursday of every month. But, because this is one of the most extensive museums in the Midwest, even paying regular admission is worthwhile for art enthusiasts. The adjacent sculpture garden is free every day of the year and offers numerous outdoor art installations.

Value

The Mall of America is a huge shopping venue. Once the world's largest indoor mall, it has now been surpassed but still draws plenty of tourists. There are few bargains to be found here, but the chances for window shopping, and perhaps finding a gem or two, are limitless. There are cheap food options at the two food courts and reasonable entertainment options at the movie theaters, sports bars and the large indoor amusement park.

Valley Fair is a large amusement park in the southwestern Twin Cities area. It is a popular summertime hangout that has both amusement park rides and a water park. For a different kind of fun, the nearby Mystic Lake Casino draws gamblers from around the state with its table games, electronic games and poker tournaments.

Splurge

Minneapolis has a vibrant theater scene. The Guthrie Theater is nationally recognized for its original productions of theater classics. The historic Orpheum and State Theaters book national touring shows and musical acts. Guthrie tickets should be bought in advance, unless you want to take your chances in the rush line.

Minneapolis has a great live music scene. Visit on the weekend, and there will be several chances to see national touring acts or local superstars playing intimate venues around the city. First Avenue and The Fine Line Music Café host the biggest names. In addition, music culture can be found at the numerous independently-owned record stores like the Electric Fetus (2000 4th Ave S) and Roadrunner Records (4304 Nicollet Ave).
