Nashville is an exciting city. Despite being billed as the home of country music, there is a lot more to do and see than the Grand Ole Opry and Country Music Hall of Fame. This is a city of great history, but it is also a modern place with a vibrant culture and arts scene.
Here are some tips to help make your trip to Nashville a successful one.
- Take advantage of public spaces. Nashville has over 100 parks. Some of these are quite small, but some are large and include fountains, monuments and plenty of open spaces. Two of the most popular public spaces are Bicentennial Park (in front of the state capitol building) and Centennial Park. Many of Nashville’s tourist sites are costly, but these parks are free.
- Nashville’s public transit is designed with working professionals in mind. It generally serves the 9 to 5 crowd. For that reason, it is best to have a car when you visit. Even then, parking around some popular sites can be a problem.
- Find a balance between past and present. Nashville is a historic city. It would be easy to move from one historic building or museum to the next without really taking in the other aspects of town. Nashville has a good live music scene as well as a glut of contemporary art galleries and quality restaurants. These parts of the city are often as exciting as the historic ones.
- Check out the Grand Ole Opry, but also spend some time in the venues where Nashville’s up-and-coming songwriters perform. The Douglas Corner Café (2106 8th Avenue South) and Bluebird Café (4104 Hillsboro Pike) are where the next generation of ambitious songwriters come to be discovered. The Basement (1604 8th Avenue South) features similar undiscovered talent from a variety of other genres.
- Look outside of town. The historic Civil War town of Franklin is a 15 minute drive from the city while famous Jack Daniels Distillery is an hour from Nashville in the town of Lynchburg.
- Nashville residents passionately support their sports teams. The Nashville Predators (NHL) and Tennessee Titans (NFL) have a rabid following and home games are quite an experience. If you can find a hard-to-come-by ticket, jump at the opportunity. It will be unlike the usually sterile pro sports experience.
- Shop at some of the many independently owned retailers in town. These sometimes quirky shops give Nashville its personality.
