New Orleans is a nightlife Mecca for travelers from across the country (and even around the world).  Legendary neighborhoods like the French Quarter and notable festivals like Mardi Gras are both reasons many good-timers consider New Orleans their number one destination.  But the Big Easy is about more than good eats and spectacular parties.  It is the home to talented jazz acts, cool lounges and laid-back local nightspots.

Here are the best nighttime attractions in New Orleans

Budget

Tipitina's (501 Napoleon) is a storied New Orleans live music venue.  It is not located in the best part of town (pre-arrange transport to and from or take a taxi), but it boasts a good line-up of local and national talent.  There is another venue of the same name in the French Quarter that hosts similar bands.

Frenchmen Street, in the up-and-coming Faubourg Marigny neighborhood, has a three block strip of live music venues that host everything from experimental jazz to folk to blues.  Frenchmen is one of the best streets, outside of Bourbon and Royal, to do a pub crawl or see a live music performance.

Maple Leaf Bar (8316 Oak) is a college hangout that hosts bands of the R&B, Cajun and Zydeco variety.  There are dance parties that run late into the night on non-concert days.

Value

Finn McCool’s (3701 Banks St) is one of the most popular Irish-themed pubs in the city.  Judging by its diverse, mostly expat clientele, it is also one of the most authentic.  This is one of the best places in the Big Easy to get a pint.

Vaughan's Lounge (4226 Dauphine) is a famous jazz music spot that seamlessly blends swinging jazz, spicy Cajun cuisine and classy atmosphere.  Even if you aren’t impressed by the impressive local talents onstage, the food is worth sticking around for.

Preservation Hall (726 St. Peter St) dishes out New Orleans flavored jazz and nothing but…quite literally.  There isn’t a bathroom or bar on the premises.

Splurge

Napoleon House (Chartres St) is a French Quarter institution.  It is housed in a 200 year-old building that still carries many of its original elements.  The bar is almost a must for those with any interest at all in New Orleans’ history.

Whiskey Blue (333 Poydras St) is a hip bar in the even hipper W Hotel in Downtown New Orleans.  This venue draws the swanky crowd and serves some of the best cocktails in the city.
