New Orleans is the cooking capitol of the Gulf Coast.  Some of the city’s classic dishes are legendary.  Specialties like gumbo, jambalaya and crawdads have become household names.  Famed chefs and outspoken foodies have chosen New Orleans as a second home because of the exciting restaurant scene.  There are classic restaurants and newer eateries vying for visitors’ attention.

Here are the best places to fill your stomach in New Orleans.

Budget

Sound Café (2700 Chartres St) is an airy, laid-back café housed within an historic 150 year old building in the hip Faubourg Marigny neighborhood.  They serve excellent coffee and home-style food to go along with the impressive ambiance.

Despite being located in one of the city’s rougher neighborhoods, Willie Mae's (2401 Saint Ann) is worth a visit for its time-tested blend of soul food and Cajun cooking.  All the classics are here: fried chicken, red beans and rice, beef brisket…

La Madeline is a local chain of French-style cafes serving food for all three meals of the day as well as tasty pastries and coffee. Most local customers consider this a breakfast spot, but the bistro style fare works well for lunch as well.

Value

Cajun Cabin (503 Bourbon) is a popular Bourbon Street restaurant.  It has classic, time-proven recipes, live bayou-flavored music and a balcony seating area that overlooks busy Bourbon Street.

Hookah Café (500 Frenchmen St) is one of the city’s up-and-coming restaurants.  Its interpretation of contemporary Cajun cuisine has been hailed by local foodies for its blend of ambition and authenticity.

Cafe Atchafalaya (901 Louisiana) is an Uptown favorite that was one of the first restaurants to re-open after Katrina.  Its seafood is second to none and the popular bar stays happening until the wee hours.  The menu also includes classic New Orleans favorites like gumbo.

Splurge

Antoine's (713 St. Louis St) is one of the oldest continually running family-owned restaurants in the US.  Legend has it that Oysters Rockefeller was invented at Antoine’s in the late 1800s.  There are 10 different dining rooms, each with its own classic, classy take on New Orleans décor.  Foodies and gourmets need look no further than Antonine’s for the perfect Southern dining experience.

Emeril’s (Downtown) is one of the most popular of the Downtown restaurant and bar combos.  Yes, it bears the name of that Emeril (Lagasse).  It might not be the finest of his projects, but it is definitely close to the source of his hometown of New Orleans.    .
