As one of the largest metropolitan cities in the world, New York City is buzzing with activity and home to hundreds of attractions, sites and exciting venues to explore.  It can be overwhelming to plan a trip to the city, especially if it’s your first time.  You need to know how to travel the subway, where to find the best places to eat, and look for great deals on sightseeing tours.  Mapping out a plan can help you get started; whether you’re on a tight budget or looking for an adventurous excursion in the city, here are some key travel tips for traveling in New York City:

Budget Travel Tips for New York City

There are dozens of sites and attractions that offer free admission throughout the week; if you’re trying to save money, you can map out your itinerary with these destinations and make the most of your visit!  Some of the best places to explore free of charge are:  Central Park and Central Park Zoo; Grand Central Station; the Staten Island Ferry; Rockefeller Center; and St. Patricks’ Cathedral.  Pack yourself a lunch with food from a local food market and head out for a day of exploring!

Sightseeing Tips for New York City

When you want to explore several sites in one day, the best way to do it is to walk to each destination.  The time it takes to get a taxi and fight traffic can put a dent in your day’s plans.  Skip the bus, train or rental car and walk to key destinations in Times Square, SoHo, downtown Brooklyn and other neighborhoods to get a taste of the local culture, events and entertainment.

Using the Subway in New York City

The subway is one of the most common methods of transportation in the city, and it’s the fastest, most affordable ways to explore New York.  Subway entrances are usually located on the street corner, and you’ll need to go down a staircase to get the station.  Most travelers use the subway with the MetroCard; look for stations marked with a red ball to use your MetroCard and hop aboard the train with ease.

All stations feature a map at the entrance, so it’s not too hard to navigate throughout your trip.  You can also pick up a map from the local newsstand so you always have the routes with you.  Once you’re on the train, make sure you find a pole to hold when the train starts to move; it can be a bumpy ride, especially if there are lots of stops along the way.  Finally, make sure you keep all of your valuables close by at all times; the subways can get very crowded, and you’ll need to move quickly when you reach your destination.
