Oakland has much of the same ethnic and cultural diversity that defines San Francisco's culinary scene. Like other aspects of the city, Oakland's restaurants are more low-key and understated than San Fran's. But the quality of the food (arguably) exceeds that of its neighbors. Like the city's other attractions, the restaurant scene is spread out throughout the diverse neighborhoods. It is necessary to travel a bit if you want to taste the best of Oakland's flavors.
Oakland's best eats are as follows:
Budget
Fenton's Creamery and Restaurant (4226 Piedmont Ave) is a 100 year old ice cream parlor that has become part of Oakland's eating culture over the years. The servings of ice cream are unbelievably generous, and the décor and atmosphere are unmatched.
Fruitvale is a center for Oakland's Latino community. Authentic eateries like San Jose Taqueria (International Blvd) and Taqueria La Costa (just two blocks down the street) feature great value, with most dishes well under $10. These places are heavy on atmosphere, despite the low prices. Taco trucks, all licensed and quite sanitary by anyone's standards, are a great meal-time option and are found throughout Oakland, especially in the Fruitvale area.
Value
Restaurant Peony, (2nd Floor of Pacific Renaissance Plaza) is one of the most popular Cantonese-style kitchens in town. The Dim Sum on weekends draws crowds because of its authenticity and quality. Waiting in line and jostling for the freshest, tastiest appetizer-sized dishes is well worth it. Shanghai Restaurant, (900 block of Webster) is a bit more low-key, serving authentic and tasty Shanghaiese fare as well as favorites from other regions of China.
Soi Four - Bangkok Eatery (5421 College Avenue) is the best of many Southeast Asian restaurants in Oakland. The sheer number of choices, coupled with affordable prices and upscale touches like an extensive wine list and simple, romantic ambiance, make this one of the city's top eating choices overall.
Splurge
Bay Wolf Restaurant (3853 Piedmont Ave) has been a popular Bay Area eatery for nearly thirty years. The understated upscale vibe is enhanced by a wide-selection of traditional dishes from all over the Mediterranean region of Europe.
Caffè 817 (817 Washington Street) is a classy Italian-style café with specialty coffee drinks and delicious, authentic pastries. Though this is not a dinner spot, it is quite popular with the breakfast and lunch crowd, mostly professionals working nearby and hipsters hanging out in Old Oakland.
