Oklahoma City Attractions
Oklahoma City is one of the fastest growing urban areas in the country. It is the largest metropolis in the plains states and has grown and diversified since an investment boom in the mid-1990s. There are many new cultural attractions, such as a thriving arts scene and newly invigorated neighborhoods such as The Asian District and the Paseo Arts District. That said, this is still a city on the plains and its history and cowboy culture are very evident.
Here are the best of the modern and historic attractions in Oklahoma City.
Budget
Myriad Botanical Gardens (301 West Reno) and the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum (620 N Harvey Ave) are great attractions in the middle of downtown. The gardens are some of the most beautiful you will ever see, while the memorial is a design marvel and a sobering reminder of the bombing of the Oklahoma City federal museum.
Route 66 Park (9901 NW 23rd) is a newly minted recreational area in northwest Oklahoma City. If you are looking for some outdoor fun, this is one of the better places. It is within a short distance of the Adventure District (see Splurge below).
Value
Bricktown is a warehouse district that has become a lively entertainment and nightlife neighborhood. There are bars, nightclubs, sports arenas and Oklahoma City’s very own buffalo herd. (These are sculptures made by local artists, not actual live buffalo). Nightlife options range from country music bars to pubs to dance clubs.
The Paseo Arts District is a bohemian enclave with fun features for artsy types. Galleries and clothing stores line the main streets of this reinvigorated (though not rebuilt) neighborhood. There is a nice collection of good cafés and restaurants here as well.
Splurge
If you are looking for a convenient place to spend a day or two, Adventure District is a good bet. Located in the northern part of the city, its features include the Oklahoma City Zoo, National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, Omniplex Science Museum, National Softball Hall of Fame, and Remington Park Racing & Casino. Each place has a separate admission, but in a sprawling city like Oklahoma City, having so many attractions so close to one another is quite a convenience.
Frontier City Six Flags amusement park is one of the best in the plains region. It features more than 50 rides and offers discounts for those who book ahead online. You’d have to head down to Texas to find a larger amusement park.
