Oklahoma City is a growing metropolis.  New attractions are just as interesting as some of the more historic ones.  Visitors will find plenty to do, but will have to strike a balance between the modern and aged attractions if they want to get the complete Oklahoma City experience.  Here are some tips to help tourists streamline their trips to this metropolis on the plains.  A trip to Oklahoma City can be memorable, if you do a little planning before hand.

  1. Oklahoma City is huge and its public transit, though quite efficient in the downtown area, is lacking in other areas.  Development has been rapid and certain destinations are not connected by bus lines.  It is necessary to either bring your car or rent a car once you arrive.  If you don’t, you’ll be missing much of what the city has to offer.

  2. Oklahoma City is quite safe compared to other cities its size.  However, tornados are frequent during the summertime.  It is important to know what to do in the event of a tornado.  Sirens warn of severe weather well in advance of any actual tornado touch-downs.

  3. Eat out.  It doesn’t have to be expensive to eat out and there is so much to explore.  Thai, Vietnamese, Ethiopian, Greek…the list of cuisine choices goes on and on.  Of course, good old Oklahoma Barbecue is always near the top of that list.

  4. If you ever find yourself with a bit of free time, head to the Adventure District in the northeast part of the city.  Many attractions are concentrated along a one-and-a-half mile strip.  These include the Remington Park Racing Casino, Oklahoma City Zoo, the Oklahoma Science Museum, and National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum.  There are also restaurants and bars here.

  5. Buy indie.  Despite its size and recent development, Oklahoma City still has plenty of independently-owned and quirky stores. Full Circle Bookstore (50 Penn Place), a large independently owned shop, and Canterbury Imports (2913 N. May Avenue), a store that specializes solely in imported food and goods from the UK, are a couple of good ones.

  6. There are several universities in Oklahoma City.  As far as urban cities go, Oklahoma is a cheap place to eat and drink out.  But the cheapest of the cheap are found near the campuses of Oklahoma State – Oklahoma City and the University of Oklahoma.

  7. Oklahoma City is a spread out metropolis.  It is the third largest city, area-wise, in the US (after Jacksonville and Anchorage).  While downtown, midtown and Adventure district are where to find the highest concentration of activities, there are sites throughout the city worth visiting.  Don’t be afraid to explore.
