Sacramento is not in the same league as LA or San Francisco when it comes to nightlife. That said, if you know where to go, this is an exciting city to be in after the sun drops. Most of Sacramento’s best nightspots are located in the Downtown and Midtown districts. There are clubs, bars, and live music venues scattered throughout these areas. In addition, there are some of quirky nighttime traditions that increase the city’s fun-loving image.

Budget

The Press Club (21st Street) is popular with the college-aged crowd. There is usually a slight cover charge, but beers and rail drinks are quite cheap. It is a reasonably hip place, though the DJs occasionally load the playlist with 80’s pop hits.

Old Ironsides (10th and S Streets) is a popular club for indie rockers. Quality local and regional acts fill the venue most nights of the week. Ironsides also has dance parties on occasion.

Value

Cubs around the capitol tend to be on the pricy side. The Capitol Garage is an exception. There is a small cover charge, guest DJs on weekends and a decidedly laid back atmosphere. Beer and rail drinks are quite cheap.

Hipster bar R15 (16th and R Street) welcomes Midtown’s coolest cats, but the trendy vibe is not reflected in the prices. Drinks are stiff because of alcohol, not because of price tag. Cafe Bernardo, an eating spot with an equivalent level of hipness, is attached to the bar.

The Crest Theater (K Street) is an antique. The art deco building and its spacious seating area play host to foreign films, offbeat festivals, and the occasional stand-up comic. The most notable festivals are the Trash Film Orgy, a series of B-movies, and the French Film Festival. The Trash Film Orgy’s attendees dress in costume and create a boisterous environment when the movie is being shown.

Splurge

Park is Sacramento’s most glitzy nightclub. This place has a strict dress code and heavy cover charge, but is definitely one of the trendiest you will come across. Because it is located near the capitol grounds, it is popular with California’s political elites and social movers-and-shakers.

Sac Badland (K and 20th Streets) is a three-storey downtown fun emporium. Its sister club is the nationally known Badlands in San Francisco. But this is no mere chain nightclub. It is one of the most popular places on club-heavy K Street. There is a spacious patio where patrons can take in the crowds on Sac town’s busiest nightlife block.
