Sacramento might be the political capitol of California but it sits in the shadows of LA and San Francisco when it comes to culture.  Though it is off-the-radar compared to these more famous urban areas, Sactown has a unique blend of old and new.  The state capitol building, the historic Old Town and the impressive collection of museums will enthrall history buffs, but the city is as much about the modern as it is about the past.  Also, it is the most user-friendly large city in California and makes up for its lack of glitz with a friendly attitude and exciting, diverse culture.

Here are some travel tips to make your trip to Sacramento an excellent one:

  1. Spend time at the city's historic sites, but not too much time.  Sacramento is the oldest city in California, but it is also experiencing a modern renaissance.  While tourists sites like Old Town, the Railway Museum and Sutter's Fort are worth looking at, there is much more to this growing metropolis than these places.  The arts scene, restaurants and nightlife look equally attractive when placed next to the city's historic sites.

  2. A car is almost necessary in Sacramento.  If you plan to travel beyond Downtown and Midtown, having a vehicle is advisable.  The city has a decent network of public transportation, but if you plan to go anywhere outside of the city center, a car is necessary.

  3. While not as wide-spread as LA or SF, Sacramento's nightlife is comparable to that of other Californian cities if you know where to look.  Downtown and Midtown are the nighttime hot-spots.  Stray from these areas and you might find a quiet neighborhood joint, if that is what you are looking for.

  4. Sacramento can be included in the itinerary of a Bay Area vacation.  San Francisco is connected to Sactown by rail and highway. Most people find Sacramento to be refreshingly slow-paced and friendly compared to the state's larger cities.

  5. It is often cheap to fly into Sacramento International Airport, but occasional deals pop up for other airports in the region.  If you can get a cheaper flight into San Jose, San Francisco or Oakland, take it.  Train and bus fares are cheap and service is offered multiple times per day.

  6. More than one million visitors come to one of the nation's largest state fairs.  The California State Fair takes place in late August and early September.  Aside from a large Midway and live music, the fair highlights California's agriculture, from wine to oranges.
